Soothing away the ills of my day with this wonderful disc, Symphonies 2 & 3.

At almost 70, Pollini is still in admirable command of his technical powers, presenting an uncompromising Brahms I  (a live performance with some studio doctoring, a good thing as we hear no applause). Pollini's interpretation hasn't markedly changed since earlier recordings, although he is willing to play softer than before. Thielemann redeems himself after his boring Brahms first symphony. The recording quality disappointed me until I realized that at louder volume, things open up considerably. It then becomes lifelike, with good but not great definition of the various instruments, no undue spotlighting of the piano, and a bit of congestion of the prominent percussion.

Cheers,

EJ
