Despite some evocative - and for its time, revolutionary 'romantic' - opening music and a good text, I've always found The Creation to fall back into an endless succession of uninteresting numbers from the mid-point onwards - I have yet to hear a performance that changes my mind. This particular recording benefits from a glorious ASMF, but the trio of soloists doesn't work for me. Fischer-Dieskau is far too serious, Mathis' essentially beautiful voice sounds tepic and shut-in, and Baldin sounds committed but unremarkable.
Cheers,
EJ
