The underdog of recorded Don Carlo's, this set is a supreme achievement in my opinion. Haitink had just conducted the opera in London with part of this cast, and their experience shows. The two leads, Margison and Gorchakova, sound good but not entirely at home in the music. Everybody else is world class. Haitink makes the difference, however, with the most sensitive and impassioned reading on disc. Overall I much prefer this recording to the more famous Solti or Giulini.

Cheers,

EJ

That has to be one of the worst album covers I've ever seen! Is it meant to be ironic? I hope the music is good.
