~<>~ Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) ~<>~

Die Klaviersonaten Vol.1

CD no.3 [66:20]

Sonate in C minor Hob XVI:20
Sonate in C major XVI:21
Sonate in E major Hob XVI:22
Sonate in F major Hob XVI:23
Sonate in D major Hob XVI:24

Walter Olbertz piano

Recordings from Lukaskirche, Dresden (various dates - 1960's & 1970's)

[ADD] Berlin classics 3 x CD box-set (p) 1996

This is my first introduction to Haydn’s piano sonata’s which I’m finding highly enjoyable.
I wonder if Haydn’s klavier musik lends itself more to the grand piano than older keyboard instruments?

Walther Olbertz, on this Vol.1 doesn’t use (imho) the calm delicacy of Alfred Brendel, (his 4 cd set I have only listened to in part on Spotify and is on my wish list) but Olbertz is very entertaining on my ear, recording is good too albeit with some very slight room reverberation.

Recommendable 3 cd box-set for the price on Amazon, I paid £2.58 for Vol.1. But Vol.2 and Vol.3 are far more expensive(?) ...perhaps he pulls all the stops out on those?

Randomly selected from the collection - not played for a while. "Dressed to Kill" excellent piece of early 80s synth pop.

Saw them live in 82 when visiting some friends back at Lufbra Uni. They were supported by Kajagoogoo!

The following night saw the Thompson Twins back in Brizzle where I was living at the time.

Hi Howard,

Whacky, whacky - oh so very whacky - but hypnotically engaging.

I hope you are well.

John.

Before they went after the CA$H they produced this glorious album, shame they could have been a contender. Putting together a phat one for the memories. Cool

iPad connected by USB to DAC.
Too bad it's not capable of charging while connected that way. And the volume is maxed out; no control by the iPad. Sounds pretty good, though.
