Late 70s and throughout the 80s and early 90s, Philips recorded many operas with Colin Davis at the helm. In retrospect, it's unbelievable how almost all of these got a lukewarm reception. This Bohème from 1979 was one of the victims. It's been said that it comes across as a rehearsal rather than a performance - believe me, it does not.

Davis has proven to be a consistently good conductor of opera, creating a sense of momentum and theatricality in the studio. Here, he had at his disposal a committed Jose Carreras and Katia Ricciarelli in their prime, and a great supporting cast. Recorded quality is superb for the time. It is truly excellent - maybe the best ever.
