Brett Anderson "Slow Attack"
I am pretty sure this album sounds better while reading the new forum, compared to a quick A/B with the old forum. But with 16 pages of complaints helpful hints posted elsewhere (except in the space to the right), YMMV.

Second listen. The disc starts with a gripping account of the Vallée d'Obermann, in a transcription for piano, violin and cello. Some of the bleakest, dramatic Liszt I have ever heard, executed to perfection by these gentlemen. After that first 12 minutes, the mood stays sombre for the rest of the disc, and with the Smetana trio even dips into the nether regions normally only occupied by Schubert in his best works. Highly recommended !

EJ,
With names like Alexander Pavlovsky , Sergei Bresler and Kyril Zlotnikov you would think that they were the Moscow and not the Jerusalem Quartet...
This is the only disc I have of them and here they are playing those late quartets of Haydn with a nice combination of young energy and a delicacy the music requires.
I enjoy them a lot.
Haim
Haim, thanks a lot. Haydn's quartets are a rich nick of the woods, which I want to explore in more detail. For some time, I followed the Quatuor Mosaiques who were all the rage - but while technically perfect, I got the sense that they 'didn't get it' - as opposed to the Alban Berg Quartet who celebrated some of their late successes in Haydn. I will give the Jerusalem a listen.

EJ,
If you get a chance, give a listen to Polyphonic Dialogues as well.

Hi Christophe
That makes three Kenny Barron fans here, at least, as Haim is, as well.
I have borrowed the bottom one of those Bradley's from the library in the past and enjoyed it as I do all his stuff. Wasn't aware the upper (vol. 2) was available.
The Getz disc is also part of a double release (the other is Serenity) and has Rufus Reid on bass and Victor Lewis on drums, ie the Kenny Barron Trio of that time period backing Getz on tour. As always, KB plays it just right.
regards

If asked to list my three favorite piano players (jazz), most days it would be 1) Bill Evans; 2) Kenny Barron; and 3) John Bunch. Few swing like Mr. Bunch can, a former music director for the likes of Tony Bennett. Albums he has made with Bucky Pizzarelli ( as New York Swing ) are wonderful and I believe he is still going strong well into his senior years. [EDIT] Wiki says he passed away last April at the age of 88 [EDIT] RIP

Hi EJ, Glad to read your review. It's on my WishList now. The Smetana being a favorite trio of mine and of course the Liszt sounds intriguing. All the other Trio Wanderer recordings I have, I've noticed these guys tend to cruise at high speed often so I wondered how the Smetana would fair?
