Cheapskate seeks enlightenment

I'm still running a steam-driven Linn Karik, and am reluctant to spend more than $1k to replace the beast. So what makes most sense? A secondhand Numerik, or a new sub-$1,000 CDP?
I realise that saving up for a Naim CDP would probably be the popular choice here. But I want to spend my dosh NOW!

Any and all suggestions gratefully received.
Thanks,
Davie

I have looked for a s-h CD3.5, with no luck so far. How would a Music Hall CD25 compare? Or a Rega Planet?

A Karik is a top end player, there's no point in replacing it with a junior Naim. You need to be thinking CDS2/3 at least.
Perhaps get a Numerik, they're very cheap and very good.

Perhaps 1000+Karik = CDX ?
But have a listen first.
Maybe a Numerik will be right for you.
Depending upon the rest of your system you may find a Naim CD player either exciting or shouting at you!
Personally I've made the choice and have Naim electrics and Linn speakers.
(BTW, having a Naim system and living in Florida sounds just about perfect to me...)

Thanks for the advice. I'm considering a s-h Numerik for $700. But the more I investigate the choices, the harder it gets. I'm now salivating over modified Music Halls (don't know if they're available in the UK) and Jolidas. Today it'll be something else.

As a boy from wet and grey Glasgow, I can tell you that Florida definitely has its plus points.

Davie, you like your KARIK(?); i took the sensible route and bought an IKEMI. have a listen then decide.you might just get a wee surprise!.my local dealer doesn't stock NAIM gear so i can't really give any advice on these cd players.

Davie,
A Numerik would be a good choice, as it gives you more of what you bought the Karik for.
I have used the original and the later SPS version and both are a useful upgrade.
They do work with Naim amps, using one of the Chord cables, or a Naim ones with the DIN chopped off and phonos put on.

In my defence, it was about 12 years ago. From your address, I'm not totally surprised you're a Linnie.

I'm also auditioning new 282/250, have to get my LP12 serviced, and need to replace or rebuild my trusty Troika.
Mucho dinero, amigos.
