Norwich – Centre Of The Universe?

Posted by: DenisA on 20 May 2006

Not only is Robert Fripp playing at Norwich Cathedral on the afternoon of Friday 16th June but Tim Bowness and Steve Wilson and a whole bunch of new music and looping luminaries are in town that night as well.

Burning Shed is holding a special event at The Garage 14 Chapel Field North, Norwich, from 8pm. The gig will feature music from Michael Bearpark, Peter Chilvers, Ben Coleman, Steven Wilson (solo), Tim Bowness plus other guests to be arranged.

Tickets are an astonishingly good value at ten quid a pop but be warned – it’s well on its way to being sold out. Hardly surprising really given that it represents a virtual No-Man reunion of sorts with Bowness, Wilson and original member violinist Ben Coleman in the building.

I've booked a days holiday and staying the night. Any recommended Pub/Food venues would be welcomed.

The recently-refurbished King's Head in Magdalen Street has recently been voted CAMRA's Norfolk Pub of the Year. And there is also the Fat Cat, amongst a number of great real ale pubs. A dip into the Good Beer Guide is definitely recommended.

Enjoy.

JWM,

Thanks for the tips. The prospect of good music and beer is something to look forward too. One old and one new hero in Robert and Steven deserve celebration ales. Is there an old faithful brew and a new kid on the block you'd recommend?

Norfolk and Suffolk have a huge number of micro breweries, and these should be well represented in the Norwich real ale free houses.

If you've not had it before, you will find the Woodforde's brewery well represented, many of which have won prizes at the CAMRA Great British Beer Festival. And I don't think you'll be disappointed!

But other less well-known beers are a real treat to find. I have a particular liking for the Chalk Hill Brewery's CHB (Chalk Hill Bitter) and if you're really luck you might find some Buffy's. I would imagine that the best place to try is the Fat Cat, CAMRA pub of the year 2005.

JWM,

Thanks again, seems like I should've booked for two nights. I get the feeling a weekend 'Tour' maybe called for.
