Record Cleaning - Mana v Fraim

Posted by: Malcolm Davey on 31 March 2003

My VPI normally resides upon a small coffee table and has been seeing steady useage. I must admit to being quite impressed with the result……. However I wondered if the surface upon which it stood could influence how well the record was cleaned.
The choice of surfaces consisted of a Mana Reference Table, Naim Fraim and the aforementioned coffee table. A number of different albums were selected and much time was spent in ensuring that the tables were level and that the Mana rang correctly.

I will be spending a few days listening to the various resulting combinations but wondered if others had tried this?

Well, after the recent titanic battles between the Fraim and Mana supports there is the new kid on the block, the coffee table. This posed new problems duirng the testing, namely where to put the beer now that the coffee table was being included in the shoot out. Much thought went into this and the mantlepiece was pressed into action. We did not want beer stains on the carpet.

Well on the Mana, the VPI was well up front, as expected. The metallic sheen was apparent on the records afterwards.

The Fraim, as usual, outshone the opposition. The operation was smoother and much more refined, the difference being in the detail.

The coffee table yielded some unexpected results. The bass was lower and broader with depth and and gave a fine polish to the surface. on the surface it gives best value for money, however, Mrs M now wants a replacement table for daily domestic use.

When the new table is purchased we will do the antique coffee table vs modern table test...

I have a 5 tier Fraim but it doesn't hold the TT, an old P3. I have my heavy coffee table shoved up against the wall so TT is on that with it's Pre-preamp underneath in the cubbyhole. I really don't want to have to put in a shelf for the TT. I can see if I get a Hicap or napsc it is going to have to be tucked in the back of the cubbyhole as no more room on the Fraim. Hope the caps aren't touchy about not being included with the other gear in the Fraim. I'd hate to hurt it's feelings, but that's life.

Geoffrey

The important factor here is the date.

Or rather dates... The box left over from Christmas, still sitting on the coffee table when we started, one fell out as we moved it and was promptly squished into the carpet, unfortunately the VPI was unable to clean this...
