Greetings Music Lovers
So it seems that the Guardian has got wrong again (as the media usually does) with their attempt at a alternative definitive list of albums to listen to before you die. So its falls to us "real" music lovers to put the record straight (pun intended).
So i think say about 25 entries each, only one from each of your favorite artists is allowed, that means 40 individual posters can participate. So try not to repeat albums but its OK to repeat artists but I'd say it would be better if we could include nearly 1000 different artists and as many different genres as we can. Can we achieve this?
When we finish we can E-mail it to the Guardian and show them the proper way to do it.
I'll start mine in the next post...

Tom is that sarcasm because its ill placed, its only fun and as people who see my selections on other threads will know I listen to alternative underground music and the Guardian tried to put an alternative selection together that was supposedly "alternative" so I started a with a list that is really alternative.
George,
That's exactly what we need but add another 5 if you can because I'll think we'll struggle to get too a 1000. And other classical lovers try to put different pieces to each other if you can. Not too many of the same composer just to make it a challenge and we don't just pull out the obvious.
Dean...listening to Sketches Of Spain, heard of that.

Five more specials coming up!
21 - Anthony Pini - Elgar Cello Concerto with van Beinum and the LPO
22 - Arnold and Alma Rosé - Bach Double Violin Concerto [with a few VPO strings in 1927]
23 - Rachel Podger - Solo Partitas and Sonatas of Bach
24 - Alan Civil - Mozart Horn Concertos with Klemperer [EMI 1960?]
25 - Ella Fitzgerald - My Funny Valentine.
This is fun! George
PS: Sketches of Spain! One the few really serious Jzz things I got my teeth into a few years ago. I reckon I might enjoy it now.
PPS: Also sorry about there being a few too Bach performances but none are the obvious choices nowadays, except our Rachel perhaps!

That's it George thanks now if I wanted to try a bit of Bach or Elgar I can look at your list and try to find that performance and would be hearing it at its best rather than just buying one willy nilly which could turn me off the composer.
Now to everybody else try to think of groundbreaking or definitive albums in your favorite genres if you can or just fantastic quality albums.

"Albums" lists don't lend themselves particularly well to classical do they?

You have to decide whether to recommend the best performances of the best compositions, or the best performances of whatever by a particular artist - they aren't always the same thing!

Ok, I know its difficult. Believe it or not I have a similar job with electronic music do I pick a masterpiece or an example of ground breaking music of the same artist I choice ground breaking and that explains the 3 Classics albums which are compilations from the same label.

ROTF,
That's alright its doesn't look as if we're going to get 40 participants so 100 is fantastic, I'll add another 25 or more Electronic albums if needed to keep a balance of course.
I'll sort through the doubled up albums at the end to see how many we end up with what we have got and post a finally list.
At the moment we have 320 albums.
Dean...

Some classical, off the top of my head as Billie Holiday sings:
Kathleen Ferrier sings Bach and Handel
Pablo Casals play Bach cello suites
Fitzwilliam Quartet play Shostakovich quartets
Tatanya Niloayeva plays Shostakovich preludes and fugues
Arnold conducts his Dances (Lyrita)
Giulini conducts Mozart's Don Giovanni
Clifford Curzon plays Schubert piano sonatas
Beecham conducting Jussi Björling in Puccini's La Bohème
Beecham conducting Schubert's symphonies 3,5 and 6
Janos Starker playing Kodaly's cello suites
That's 10 for the pot. Serious omissions Bach's violin sonatas and paritas (Perlman, Mullova, Oistrakh, Podger, Kremer ...), other versions of the cello suites (Isserlis, Cocset, Fournier,et al); Beethoven's string quartets; a little more Wagner; an unaccountable absence of Haydn, Purcell and Marais.
