Greetings Music Lovers
So it seems that the Guardian has got wrong again (as the media usually does) with their attempt at a alternative definitive list of albums to listen to before you die. So its falls to us "real" music lovers to put the record straight (pun intended).
So i think say about 25 entries each, only one from each of your favorite artists is allowed, that means 40 individual posters can participate. So try not to repeat albums but its OK to repeat artists but I'd say it would be better if we could include nearly 1000 different artists and as many different genres as we can. Can we achieve this?
When we finish we can E-mail it to the Guardian and show them the proper way to do it.

I think the Guardian should be impressed - the well known bands have much better album selections and the list as a whole shows much more diversity and avoids so much mainstream pop.

I added in the extra entries from Steve and ightenhill, added a few I missed, a couple from JCS's top ten threads and a few of my own. The list contains quite a few of my own suggestions - too many in my view. If there are alternative suggestions then I'm very happy for some of my entries to make way.
Thing is I know what records I like and it's much more interesting to learn about music that others like. That's the great thing about the forum, it leads me to explore music than I would never had tried otherwise. My assumption is if somebody has nominated a favourite and I haven't heard it then it must be worth a listen.
I think the list needs refining - there are some duplicates/dubious entries. One of the duplicates is probably down to me, but no computer program is going to spot it - I only just noticed I'd put in suggested albums by both Fairfield Parlour and Kaleidoscope - not sure if that is allowed.

PS If anybody wants to take over the list then it should be easy - for example Excel has an option under Data called Text to Columns setting the fixed width to 4 will put the number in the first column and the artist/title in the next. Repeating the Data > Text to Columns and setting the Delimiter to '-' will put the artist in the second row and title in the third. It is then easy to use Excel to organise the data. The script I used at first was written in Perl, but it is just as easy to do it in Excel.

I still don't like the idea of having Greatest Hits albums on the list.
Am I a lone voice?
Rarely, if ever, has a greatest hits album had more musical or artistic merit than at least one of the group's "proper albums".
If you agree send in a post and lets get some suggestions for replacements.

Thanks for that - I don't see a problem with you having a lot of nominations, it just shows your enthusiasm for discovering and enjoying new music. Some people are adventurous, others stick to what they know.
Anyway there's no reason why the list can't be edited and fine tuned.
I will certainly be scouring the list for albums I haven't heard - my personal preference is for instrumental and improvisation; jazz, rock, experimental, rather than computer generated dance/sounds.

Apologies to all Billy Cobham fans.
The Desperate Bicycles Anthology contains their only album Remorse Code, the 4 track EP New Cross, New Cross and their 3 big hit singles. I personally think that the 4 track EP and their 3 big hit singles represent the pinnacle of the music made by the New Wave/Punk Bands. The Anthology is now available for free as MP3 download - the group don't care just as long as their records are not rereleased or put on CD. If it were a top 10 of unique groups then I would include the Desperate Bicycles.
We could replace Anne Briggs Collection with her 1973 album Sing A Song for You.
As for George Formby, I love his songs and performance - that is the album of his that I own, but any collection of his songs would do me.
There are other artists that I included that I would want to sacrifice before loosing the DBs, Anne Briggs or George F.

This is a really good thread which I have just only just seen as i rarely venture into the naim Forum these days.
Lots of truly excellent records but also some glaring omissions.
The most obvious - and I really cannot believe they have been forgotten - is anything by the Byrds, arguably the best American band of the 60s.
They made some marvellous LPs but my favourite is 'The Notorious Byrd Brothers' (1968).
These three are all great post-punk records with predominantly female musicians:
The Raincoats - 'The Raincoats' (1979)
The Slits - 'The Slits' (1979)
X-Ray Spex - 'Germ-free Adolsecents' (1978)
One of my favourite 80s albums is The The's 'Soul Mining'(1983) - surely this deserves a place in a Top 1000?
No Roy Harper - tsk, tsk. One of the best UK singer-songwriters ever. Loads of great LPs and hard to choose just one but maybe 'Stormcock' (1971), just ahead of 'Flat, baroque and Beserk' (1970).
The Arctic Monkeys have made two of the most acclaimed albums of recent years but neither is on the list.
Coming to the 90s I can't believe that Slint's 'Spiderland' (1991) isn't there. Enormously influential. In the same vein, Mogwai's 'Young Team' (1997) and Godspeed you Black Emperor's 'Lift your Skinny Fists like Antennas to Heaven' (2000) are essential inclusions.
There are many cool electronica albums in there but one I would certainly add is Lemon Jelly's 'lost Horizons' (2002).
Finally and coming right up to date, three big bands of the last couple of years aren't represented: Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party and the Klaxons. I think each deserves to be in there as does Amy Winehouse. Despite all the hype surrounding her, 'Back to Black' (2006) is a very good listen.
There, loads of good records but what should be deleted to make way for them?

Some good suggestions there Paul. And some (as you say) glaring omissions. Its often hard to spot these in a list of 1000. Maybe some could go in in place of the various artists entries?
If those are to be kept maybe there should be some sort of description of what they contain and why they should be included. I must admit I've never heard of any of them.

I think the Naim members list should not list the same mainstream bands/artists that the Guardian did - otherwise what's the point? It isn't an alternative list.

The exception to the above rule is obviously a band (for eg) like The Who, who were groundbreaking and popular, being given a token compilation entry. And this I think the existing Naim list has dealt with really well.
