Matt,

The CDPS was the power supply for the CDS1. Just like the XPS is the power supply for the CDS2.

I have stated elsewhere the possible merits of CDPS vs XPS and hope to solve this with my own ears on Friday. I do know that a CDPSed CDX is a significant improvement on a stand alone one especially when considering the relative costs £600-ish against £2000-ish (XPS s/h is a very rare breed).

The reason why they are turning up on the s/h market is because of Naim's good PR exercise with CDS1 - ie. offering to convert them to CDS2 spec for £1600. CDS1 owners who do this are then likely to want an XPS, hence spare CDPSs. Nonetheless, so long as you are in possession of modified Burndy lead CDPS will work with CDX or CDS2 head unit; but be extra vigilant about switching everything off before disconnecting a CDPS - for technical reasons which Mark explained (and I immediately forgot), there is a very nasty discharge through the speakers if you don't.

I will post my opinions on CDX/CDPS/XPS soon.

Thanks for that Alex & Andrew...I haven't been following Naims top stuff that far back. The CDPS seems like a cost effective upgrade, but as I understand it not as good as the XPS & then theres the lead prob...ok thanks for your info...Bye

Alex I am one such person who has had my CDS1 converted to a CDSii and at the same time had my CDPS serviced and a Black Burndy added.

I was advised that it is not really worth going from a CDPS to an XPS..as a cost effective upgrade..as is mentioned it is a considerable price difference even with a trade in.

However, I haven't had the opportunity of doing a comparison between the two as yet... but I am sure that someone on here has maybe done that and can report back.

Rest of the system comprises.. 52/Supercap/(Black Burndy)/2x135s/NBLs.

I was using a pair of early 80's Isobariks before, Ken.

I have had the NBL's for a couple of weeks now and in my particular listening room, concrete floor, fully carpeted, 17x12 feet, fairly well furnished, they sound very balanced indeed.

The whole frequency range from top through mid the bottom is so much better than before.

I have read that they can be rather forward and "in your face" sounding..but I have found no such problem in my setup.

It is a revelation going through old CDs and vinyls that havent been played for a while and listening to them afresh. The clarity is amazing.

The bass response is superb...and recordings with very deep bass ... cause no distress to the mid and upper drivers at all.

Give them a listen if you get the chance..at home on at least a weeks dem connected to your system.. they will sound different from the way they do at a dealers..of course..hopefully to their advantage!

My 70% improvement guess is an average of what Paul at Naim and Jude at Grahams have said. I'll listen myself on Friday. In all cases this relates to CDPS used with a CDX. It might work better with a CDS1 since it was originally designed to partner that player.

Do you or someone else know the relative merits of CDS1 & CDX?
