Music downloads what is best for an AV2

Posted by: Don Hooper on 21 December 2010

I have just been offered free downloads from Linn. What can the AV2 decode?

CD WMA
CD FLAC
STUDIO MASTER WMA
STUDIO MASTER FLAC

Will down load to my laptop.

How do I get the data from the laptop to the AV2?

This is new to me so please be gentle. I know stereo and surround sound but Downloads are a step into the unknown.

Thanks for helping.

Just been reading the AV2 manual. Not very helpful in this regard, although I know that it will take a digital input from a CD transport and decode it, so it does "red book". At one time I tried using the AV2 decoder using a digital output from my DVD5 (i.e. I just put a CD in the DVD5 and used the DVD input on the AV2 Winker), but I marginally preferred the sound of the DVD5's analogue output into an analogue input on the AV2.

All I can suggest is :
1. Ask Naim support
2. Should you be too impatient to wait for a reply from Naim, then if your laptop has a digital audio output, then just connect it up to one of the AV2's digital inputs and see what happens. I suspect that at most it may handle 16bit "normal" resolution WMA files, but would be surprised if it could decode HiRes files or FLAC. If the files are free, what have you got to lose by trying? Should you not wish to download a file to try it out, just rip a CD track to WMA on your laptop and try that. Just keep a finger near the "volume down" button in case it makes an awful noise.

Assuming your laptop has a digital out you need to connect this to your av2 otherwise you a hiface or simlair.

The av2 does not decode the files, but your pc does with apporiate software such as foobar.
