52 PS

Posted by: Martin C on 30 December 2002

Hi there,

Need some advice from you guys.

I have seen a 52 Power supply on cheap. I am using 82 with single Hi-cap at the moment, I am not sure whther I can use the 52 PS for the 82.

As far as I know, 52 PS is dedicated to 52, as Burndy cable has to be used, please reconfirm, thanks.

There is also a 52 on cheap, but the serial no. is 66xxx, it was serviced by Naim though.

cheers

Doesn't have the sockets to power a 82. Too bad!

Can be upgraded into a Supercap for about £1,000 ish

The old 52 and PS bought as a unit could be ok, but not much use separately. Many old 52PS were upgraded to Supercaps, but this is quite expensive.

Thanks Dave & Malcolm,

What a shame!

The 52 is £2000 & the PS is £500, as I said B4, the serial no. are around 66XXX, but serviced by naim (don't know when?). Was it worth it?

I only bought my 82 & Hi-cap back a year ago, I may get the similar value for selling them? But would it be that different, new 82 to old 52?

cheers and happy new year!

I was surprised how little difference there was between the 82/twin hicaps and the 52/PS (8xxxx series) when I upgraded in 1993. It got better with burn in, but the Supercap upgrade (£950) and the Pots board upgrade (£175 when the old one failed) took it into a different league.

A late 52/Supercap will probably only go for c.£3000 (£1400ish + your 82/Hi). My advice is to hold out for one of these or a Supercap for the 82.

Forget the 52ps and go for a supercap.

An 82 requires a supercap before you hear what it really can do.
