Vinyl Recording to iMac - For Beginners
Posted by: Obsessed1 on 20 March 2010
I need some suggestions for recording vinyl to an iMac from a turntable/Naim Uniti set-up. I also have a TC konnekt8 that links the iMac and Uniti by a firewire cable.
Do I need any other equipment (i.e., can I use the konnekt8 as an A/D converter?)
What software do I need to record the vinyl (which program ideally would add spacers between songs without requiring me to be at the computer to manually add them)?
Once recorded, how would I play the tunes on the computer? Can it be done through iTunes?
I'm not particularly computer savvy, so I'm looking for a fairly clear and simple discussion of how to get going.

record as one WAV file, then split up when you decode to ALAC or AIFF.
No idea how to help on a Mac sorry.

Use Pure Vinyl as the recording software which will provide the 64 bit based RIAA correction in software so you can use the mic preamps of Konnekt to give you the required gain. Will sound very good if you are careful with the recording level.

I used my preamp with a low filter into the amp out that was into a CDR. This way I got rid of the terrible woofer-eating low frequency feedback I had. It sounds OK. Used apple lossless for download to itunes from the CDR disc. Not a hifi record player but it did archive my LPs tht are not on CD. Good luck.

Simpler (and cheaper) than buying Pure Vinyl software would be to connect the output of your Phono Pre-amp to the line inputs of the TC Konnekt and then use Audacity. Audacity is limited to 24/96, but it depends what level of recording you are aiming for. Other software options would include Audiophile Engineering's Wave Editor or Apple Garage Band.

Thanks for the replies. I will check out Pure Vinyl and Audacity.
