How the West Was Won looks and sounds stunning on Blu-ray. Despite the age of the film (1963), it looks like it was made yesterday, and puts to shame some of todays HD discs. The restoration including cleaning up the 'joins' in the 3 part image is superb. Strongly recommended as it is unlikely to get any better than this.

Dear Frank,
Sound options are 5.1 dts-HD Master Audio & 2-channel Dolby Digital.
The sound quality on my original Gladiator DVD was pretty exceptional - encoded in dts-ES, but the BluRay's a whole different kettle of fish.
I'm using the Oppo BluRay player to do the decoding & feeding the 7.1 analogue inputs on my AV2.
Thanks much Tony!

Haim, how did you find "The Visitor"? I was slightly underwhelmed by the film despite some great acting.

We watched Angels And Demons on BluRay last night.
Nothing like the book of course and despite all the slagging off the film's had we thought it was pretty good.
The way they managed to recreate scenes around the Vatican without actually being allowed to film there were very impressive, plus the quality of the picture and sound was exceptional.

Not a DVD ,but went to see District9 last night ,not as good as I thought it would be, judging by the positive reviews I had read in several papers.

Same here, Maher, disappointed.
A good movie I may recommend though I am not sure that you can get in SA (it is an Israeli film):

This was really fun and touching. One of the great things is the scenery, I"ve never seen the desert and western landscape filmed so well. It becomes a character in it's own right.
then I watched

such a delightful film

I think it benefits from not being 6 1 hour episodes as the original BBC mini series!

Saw this last night. Superb. It's about a doctor from a rich but decadent family with a checkered past. He joins the Italian Fascists Secret Police in order to become a normal member of society. He marries a member of the Petit Bourgeois to complete the picture.
Not top give the ending away, but he finally discovers that his quest for normalcy is a farce. As Fascist Italy falls he realizes that his reasons for joining, like the farcical ideology he pretended to believe in, have led him to murder, betrayal, and in the end a hint of latent homosexuality, which once suppressed, now comes to the fore in the closing scene.
Stunning cinematography and superb acting all around.

Watched Blade Runner ,Final Cut, I'd forgotten how slow and dark it was, the sight of Joanna Cassidys' tits brightened things up, oh and the music.

It's a rather difficult movie. It's very likely that people viewing for the first time might not understand it very well, ending or no. The time frame and context are constantly changing (the film begins near the middle and then flashes back before beginning all over again). At any rate, the ending is ambiguous, so my telling it is just my interpretation. You can make of it what you will.
