Uniti with Linn Majik 140
Posted by: Hani on 28 December 2010
Hello everyone,
I have a Uniti connected to my Majik 140, considering an upgrade, what would be a smart upgrade? NAP 200 or 250? The Naim website recommends the NAP 200 as an upgrade, why not the NAP 250? Is there a big difference between both (other than the price)?
Do you i need to consider any other equipment such as pre-amp, power supply, etc...
Cheers.

I had the same problem - how to upgrade the Uniti - go with the 200 - more than ample and easier to partner with speakers.

250 would be better but the 200 is recommended as being more cost effective. The difference would be greater with more in front. If you're eventually going to upgrade from the uniti pre and player at some point, a 250 may not be a bad choice depending on timetable and level of change.

Tog, cheers mate, i guess i will go for the NAP 200 for the time being.
JS, if i consider the NAP 250, which other equipment would i need to add? You reckin the Majik 140 can handle the NAP 250?

The Uniti can handle both 250 & 200 with no extra boxes required. I guess you need to consider your future plans, If you aim to stick with the Uniti then the 200 will do the job. If you plan to later upgrade to a pre and power then you should consider your landing point - only if that involves a 250.2 would I recommend the additional outlay over performance above the 200 for your Uniti.
I have had Uniti and added 250.2 then added a 282 pre amp (plus hi cap2) using the uniti as source. These were all deliberate steps on a slow upgrade plan. I now have added an Ndac with the view to selling the Uniti to fund the N serv
On the grounds Naim recommend the 200 I would echo their recommendation unless you have a longer term plan as above.
Of course if you money is burning a whole in your pocket you could add a power line.
The Uniti is an excellent and flexible product - I found the streaming superb.

Cheers Gary, the 250 offers more seperates upgrade path for the future, but i was just wondering how different would my current setup sound on both the 200 and the 250? Small difference or big? Some say small and some have said big, i am a little confused since i have not audioned neither the 200 or 250.

Auditioning them is a must - home demo if you are spending that kind of cash.

Yes, home demo is preferable.
I never tried the 200 but that was deliberate.
I guess your decision could be driven by your speakers. I had SL2's and a 18ft square room hence my choice.
Subject to speakers and room size if you bought a 200 you could buy a power line and still have change v a 250.
Home demo is the way forward but if you plan to stick to Uniti + power amp then save yourself some money and get the 200. I would suspect the performance gain would be marginal between the 200 and 250.2 and not worth the extra cash

I will wait to audition both then, just waiting for my NAIM dealer (in Dubai) to have both in stock so that i can audition both of them.
Cheers guys.

I must say I was really quite surprised at just how good a combination the Uniti and 250.2 was recently. We had a customer in looking to upgrade Uniti/KudosX2 and considering 200 vs 250.2. The 250.2 certainly made a very good argument for itself which was a surprise since we kind of believe in source first a lot around here...

Nothing wrong with the Uniti as source - my dealer recommended it as an excellent pre-amp as well with a streamer thrown in.
