NAP 120

eBay has a listing for a NAP 120 power amp. I've never heard of such a thing, and it looks different than any of the old-style components. Any info on this beast?

Have you emailed the seller and asked some questions?

He is not getting confused with a 12pre amp?

Not yet. He's offering a 42 pre as well.

All I can find out is that the NAP120 was produced in 1978, and apparently only for one year.

Bonjour Jay,

The picture is indeed of a short-lived Naim product.

I have one (along with a NAC 22)! It was a unique kind of a beast. 2 x 40W in 4 ohms with the heat sink in front and old style Canon mains plug.

Fused speaker bananas squished between the heat sink fins. Forget about using the official Naim bananas on this item :-(

It is now my home office system (along with a 112/HiCap and Philips CD460 into Advent/1s)

I must admit it's a little short in the bass department but otherwise, it's the Naim sound you know and love.

Naim used Toshiba power transistors in those days if I remember correctly and the power transformer is the regular box type instead of the toroidal variety. It does make it little more prone to pick up humm.

Martin

PS for Manu : How much to recap a 120 ? Is it worth it ? how about a 22 ?

Funny, the item the seller is calling a 42 is really a 42.5, worth a bit more than the standard 42. In any event, the preamp is much less elderly than the amplifier.

A 12s/120 was my first Naim amp. A strange looking litle thing but an absolutely wonderful amplifier. I kept it for four years & drove all manner of speakers with it, including Yamaha NS1000's and, briefly, Isobariks. I traded it on the 250 which I still have today. People just looked at it in amazement when they heard what it could do.

I still have fond memories and wish I'd kept it for a second system.

That's interesting... so it's less powerful than my Nait 3, or (?)
