Dear Don,
I knew that was coming! I think we can probably agree that my gramophone is in total worth rather less than the average annual depreciation of a new standard type saloon car! It is very much "in proportion" and no one has yet said, "there shall be no pleasure!"
In fact one of the reasons I like my rather modest set is that it actually does not lead me to consider what else I might have spent the money on, or consider it worth enough to sell. I shall not be upgrading, but merely modifying and servicing, which for the rest of my life will probably amount to less than the cost of a good flat panel TV screen at current prices!
As much as anything else, I think sometimes people should have a certain complacency questioned. That is healthy. People have actually caused me to question my own! I was asked why I put so much effort into playing the music? Good question, No answer. No regrets at packing in!

Dear Don,
You have misunderstood what I was trying to say, I think. There is a difference between excess and moderation - between Hedonism and simple pleasure. As the old saying goes, "All things in moderation." By all means use one of the old hangers to keep a Vulcan rust-free, and on show. By all means keep the case of an old organ polished and tidy, but save a fortune by fitting an inexpensive digital sampling replacement. There is one in Worcester Cathedral, which shows an exemplary approach to how to save money whilst preserving the possibility of playing organ music in the building.
I know that most of us have done things to excess in our lives, but it is quite a fine thing to examine what constitutes the dividing line between excess and moderation. This line also moves as the circumstance of the world about us also changes.
All the best from George

Looks like you want to set the rules....I believe thats called DICTATORSHIP.
That's what I am objecting to Fred - not specifically YOU being the dictator, but dictatorship in general.
You see, if the rules are set by some poor starving sod in Africa, YOUR hifi system would be percieved as an excess....
Get the idea?
you obiously do when you say "This line also moves as the circumstance of the world about us also changes." Its just the line can easily be drawn around YOU rather than down the English Channel or between spending personal disposable income on restoring a Vulcan Bomber or a hifi set.
Cheers

Dear Don,
I think we can say that we disagree on this. What is not quite so clear to me is that it has anything to do wish dictatorship. I would rate it a question of judgement. For example I suspect you run a much fancier gramophone than I do, and for you to comment in the style you do about my rather modest set appears to me to be coming close to a lack of clarity about where your judgement lies in the issue of music replay and excess.
Of course to say a refugee from Darfur, then my set would be an excessive indulgence, but viewed from the perspective of a working man in the UK, then less than a thousand pounds worth of gramophone [ turning the machine off when not in use, abstinence from having a TV, putting the car of the road next week for the summer etc.] might well be viewed as fairly modest expenditure on personal pleasures.
One of my main concerns about the Vulcan thing is the incredibly pointless waste of fuel and resources that would certainly be better directed to more genuinely useful aims, whether this be better funding for Air-ambulances, for one relatively closely related example, or actually properly equipping our Armed Services for the work they are doing in Afghanistan and Iraq for another.
Some times I think it is entirely fair to point these things out, though I would defend your right to disagree with me. That is hardly a dictatorial attitude is it?
