Rear surrounds - recommendations to go with n-series at front

Posted by: Ian P on 05 September 2007

Hi,

Would anyone like to recommend suitable options for rear surrounds which sonically, and preferrably aesthetically, match n-sat/cent/sub (in maple) for the other channels. The price point would be £200-£300, and I'm looking for something smaller than n-sats which will need to work mounted on the wall behind a sofa pushed up to the wall.

My dealer is on the case, but just thought I'd ask for general opinions!

Thanks

Ian,
I have exactly the same wish, so if you do solve it please let us know.

I have nSat fronts. I have picked up Neat Motive C second hand with a view to second hand Neat Motive 3 Rears. However they are only marginally smaller foot print than nSat and infact are slightly taller and probably over your budget. So I would be very interested in any better suggestions.

cheers,
Dave

I use IBL's at the front (no centre) and I also wanted something smaller than n-sats for the rears. I ended up with wall mounted Castle satellites which are a good aesthetic match for the IBL's and sound good too. I understand however that Castle has ceased to trade. For the price you quote I think it will be difficult to achieve a good sonic match with n-sats but in my experience this is not so critical with the rears. I was looking in a hi-fi mag in a shop the other day and saw some small budget speakers that were shaped very much like mini n-sats. I think they may have been Wharfedale but I'm not sure. Anyway try going into your local WH Smiths and looking in all this months hi-fi mags to see if you can spot them! Hope you have some luck.

I'm going to try a pair of Monitor Audio Radius 90's in black, as there is an ex-demo pair available through my dealers network, and I have read reasonable reviews of them on other forums. They're also very small (7.5 inches tall), and fairly versatile in the way they are mounted/directed it seems.

To be clear they were not recommended by my dealer who personally has no experience of them, but I hope they will work.

I'll let you know how I get obn with them.
