Hardware upgrades, really ? They've kept that quiet. A real shame they didn't truly upgrade the HDX and leave the HDs out..! Good news though that Naim are indeed keeping on top of the spec and swapping out the HDs as and when better (presumably) units becomes available...
I haven't seen the review yet, but sounds like a bang up to date HDX from HQ has been submitted for a review...In the meantime, actual customers with machines still await said software update, slightly unfairly IMO....

hi SC;
are you sure Naim will swap out drives in HDX? or is that just wishing?
than, you would have a pure, great, super, high-end...streamer:-)

Sorry guys we were due to release 1.4d last week for machines in the field but we discovered an issue with the installer/update sequence which has caused delays we are so close its not true... we will shout to you very loud as soon as you can have it. Many people are now using this in beta and we wished to be very sure before general release that all would be fine.

Thanks for the feedback Paul.
With hardware upgrades to existing products comes the "inevitable" questions from those who bought older variants.
Are you considering making specific hardware upgrades available to those with original HDX's?
I say 'specific' because I understand some types of H/W upgrade might be impractical, however hard disk upgrades should be possible, for example.
I also accept that unlike most software updates, hardware upgrades would come at a cost...
Cheers,
Tonytronic ( ps DAC already on order ).

No, I said no such thing - I said it was a real shame they DIDN'T leave them out....As you say, it would then be a thoroughbred top notch streamer...
Steve.

can someeone be so kind and explain the hardware and software update finally ? or is it such a secret and and an gala announcement is planed from naim side ?...we also don´t get the hifi news here..or at least very delayed
i have been alway interested in the hdx, but not with so low hard disc capacity, so i didn´t buy one.i also don´t want to attach external hard discs. for me the hdx should be the perfect all in one box.for other uses you will get a streamer most probable soon.

You'll be able to rip to outside storage, use as server and access anything attached to it, have better control of the library management, interface is improved for faster access in large libraries, I think you'll be able to native hi res etc. Very encompassing. Wasn't aware of any hardware changes. I believe the dtc is also updated. Dave was up a couple of days a go and it installed seamlessly. We're streaming HDX attached files to a Uniti at 24/96. Unity has beta also and is also taking 24/96 via USB now. Could be our imagination but the Uniti seams to sound even better via stream and USB than before. May be some improved buffer managenment or like I said, imagination as we listen to a lot of 24/96 when we can. Haven't had time to play with the HDX much but we accessed all the functions as Dave showed them without a hitch. Update will be no different than new as the software is completely replaced and not modified. There's good reason to beta these things before full release. What's out there isn't broken so there's no rush.

so actually no big news as mentioned in the first postings? just the software update, which was promised already for a long time ?. no hardware update at all ?...
Posted on: 08 November 2009 by Klout10
Ripping to a NAS should be possible with this upgrade (amoungst others), which seems very important for a lot of HDX users. Not for me though...
Don't know anything about any hardware upgrade yet.

Michel

Any thoughts about the possibility of retro-fitting things? And if so, at what cost?

500 gb..i am speechless....
sorry for being ironic..but the hdx deserves more capacity...but who cares...it seems just to bother me...everyone else is happy about all the cables and nas and and and...
at least it was a hope...
back to the dac then or another non naim product....

Ripping to external solves any capacity issues. The drive change may just be due to what's available in approved drives.

Maybe I missed this way back when it was first discussed but can anyone tell me how an existing user will get the software update? Will I be able to download it, does Naim or my dealer send it? Is it FoC!

If like the last one, I suspect Naim prefers dealers to do it and it will load via CD. HDX does the rest without prompt. Like most upgrades of this type, it will be VERY important to let it fully load and boot. Contact your dealer when available.

The december-issue of Hi-Fi-News & Record review goes on sale Friday, 13th. 2009. Let's wait and don't speculate to much. Shure: 500 GB-Drive whould be nice. More importand for me was to store on NAS-dives because of the very low capacity of the HDX-drive. If you own something between 5.000 and 6.000 CD's you can imagine the problem.

Rainer
