"It's with profound sadness that we have to inform you that Mick finally lost his battle with cancer and passed away peacefully at 4.30pm today, 4th January 2011 at home in Chelsea, London. He was surrounded by his family and friends and will be deeply missed by all.

A stunning musician, collaborator of forum favourite Steve Wilson, but perhaps most remembered for his fretless bass playing in Japan. Alongside Steve Jansen (drums), he formed one of the most original and inventive rhythm sections.

I saw him many years ago and was well impressed. He was well cool as well, which mattered a lot in Japan

A very cool Mick Karn:

I remember a schoolmate's older (much cooler) brother liking Japan, so Tin Drum was somehow the third or fourth record I bought. Hearing it again this week, Mick's fluid playing seems to stand above the album's many other very individual and distinctive sounds, of course. As well as its immediate influence on Talk Talk amongst others, you can still hear this record in acts like The Knife/Fever Ray today.

Still sounds great.

had been aware of his illness, only learned of his passing through this thread.  I had read of a possible new dalis carr colaboration in the works with Peter Murphy; perhaps it wasn't to be.

his music will continue to be regularly enjoyed, while Mick Karn will be sadly missed.
