best analogue sound from DVD5
Posted by: Asbjoern on 29 March 2009
Hello naim friends!
I just changed my CD5i (mak. 1) to a DVD5 in order to get into the world of dvd music and films. I go 2 channel only, hooking the dvd5 up with a nait5i and naim av monitors connected by chord anthem 2 rca and naca5.
Now could anyone please tell me; does the dvd5 sounds better via the din outputs like any other naim source? In this case I'm also thinking about the it's CD sound.
thanks a lot if anyone can help!

Conventional wisdom would give a thumbs up to having a Din-Din, especially as you have the 5i...Whether there really would be that much in it, I couldn't say 100%...
I believe Maxbertola has been playing around with his new-ish DVD5 and AV2 and found the HiLine to be beneficial for CD replay...He may chip in here...
If the DVD5 upscaled it's video, I would be right with you............

To hear is to obey.
Hi, Asbjoern, welcome to the forum. I moved to DVD5 from a CDX2, so just imagine my expectations.
I didn't try the RCA sockets having always used the recommended DINs, and I already possessed a HiLine which I used with the DVD5. In general, though, I am not sure I am a good test because I hate having options and always follow what the manifacturer has suggested, the more if it's Naim.
I'd use the DINs, but please do experiment. As for the HiLine, it's an undisputable upgrade over the standard interconnect, which is not bad at all, but I am doing some serious compare between the DVD5's and the AV2's own DACS, with some surprises about which I'll report soon after having received and auditioned my new DC1 coax.
Enjoy!

I would borrow and try a Naim DIN-DIN interconnect - it should be preferable.
When using the DVD5 to play CDs of DVD-A you should ensure that the video circuits are switched off. This can be achieved by switching off the front panel display (best) or use the technique in "Video outputs off" below to switch off video outputs but leave display on.
Display
Remote only: Single press on disp button to scroll through - title/chapter info (track info for CDs), time elapsed and display off modes. The display will be momentarily reinstated when important status information changes.
For DVDA and CD discs the video outputs will also switch off when the front panel display if off.
Video outputs off
Remote only: For DVDA and CD discs the video outputs may be switched off without the front panel display being switched off (see display function above).
To do this press and hold the disp button when playing back one of the above disc types.
To reinstate the video outputs press the disp button once. Further presses of the disp button operate normally.

I thank so much for your answers!
it took me a while to discover the dvd5's musical capability. first off I didn't think it was a simple thing to conclude that it beats the forward and open sound of my former cd5i. The dvd5 seemed much more laid back, more than i liked actually, though it's very comfortable, like in a turntable. Then i changed the never used fitted power cable to the power chord that i always used for cd5i and boy did something happened! I also managed to get back the din-din chord cobra 2 instead of the rca chord anthem2. and yes, again, it's much better, even though the anthem in it self should be a much better cable than the cheap cobra. Just not if used in naim set up via rca!
and SC: thanks i'm also sure that the hi-line would be a significant upgrade, but since i don't even oweasreen yet, i think the money would be btter spent there! After all the dvd5 was meant to take me into the wonderful visual world. I use to say that you can get anything - you just have to pay something to get it!
And to Adam: thank you and yes; I'm sure the standard naim din would do even better than the cobra now in use. I'll get my self one by the time. also thanks for the video surcuits off help, had the function my mind after reading the manual, but with out a screen, so it's hard to use commands taken from the menu of the player. but the remote only disp trick sounded to work!
and Max: you're very right! the hear it self decides what's best! Paper specifications and theories doesn't say anything when the music plays. The din sounds much better in a more organic way that the very detailed but much more kind of irritating way that the rca anthem in this case came up with. that's the very good and very reliable thing about naim. Stick to it and you're sure to get something that works! Who cares about certain details in any disc if you don't hear them but are left with a different and very engaging sound! anyway, i think changing a cdx2 to a dvd5 would bleed in my musical heart though i never heard the cdp, as i think the excperience would dig very deep holes in my pockets. how did you manage to get over it, or is the dvd5 rally such a good player? sounds wonderful to me now, no doubt.

Asbjoern,
as I told you, I found the CDX2 a really, really good player, but - on the other hand - there are other good players. Once you stick to Naim, though, it sort of becomes choosing one as well as trying to exclude as many other options as possible. So, inside Naim there's only one direction, that is following the path of their unique sound philosophy until it ends on until your money ends...The CDX2 was a particular position in the path; it seemed to me that one could have gone from the CD5 to the CDS3, but the financial gap would have been too wide; so, in a way, I think that the CDX2 fills a price point gap as much as a quality one. The CDX2, to dispaly its full potential, needs to be XPSed - at least, it's my and many others's opinion. So I XPSed it, and then I could have gone all the way to the top and start to look for a CDS3 head unit, but instead I decided to stop where I was and follow the parallel path of audio video. And since I didn't want to become the owner of a system costing like a car (there are other points of view if you like, other than sound quality, like ethics for instance),
I decided to give up the wonderful stereo set and settle for a very good AV one.
I am very much satisfied with my DVD5, and I mean to post a few impressions that could be of some use to those who can't (yet) afford a Powerline.
So, enjoy your system, and let the DVD5 work for a few weeks.
Ciao.

Max:
You're guite right; you can continue and continue; I think the issue just is to get something that satisfies your need and expectations. In this case I'n very satisfied with the dvd5, I don't have to go futher with the level of cd-sounds it gives. after all it delivers the best cdp sound I ever had! My future resources are much better spend on dvd materials and enjoy it! concerning about mainleads which sonds to be n issue with the dvd5, I've found the powerchord a good and cheeper alternative to powerline. same goes for using it with the nait5i and cd5i. I'd been told it makes an upgrade to any of naims entry level products - not for the 555-series and cdp's from cdx2 and up the line.
cheers

I traded in my CD3.5/Flatcap for a DVD5 and have been impressed with the CD playback. However, what would people consider to be my next upgrade path to boost the performance. Rest of system is 82/hicap/250.2, Spendor S6e with Chord crimson interconnect. I have up to £ 1,000 budget.

I would seriously only change that far away from up to the rest of your system interconnect of crimson to a naim din - and then enjoy the sound, not thinking of ANY upgrade for a long time - 'cause your system's really terrific!!!
