Best Bach Matthew Passion??

Posted by: hungryhalibut on 12 February 2010

I've just got a copy of Hilary Hahn's 'Piano and Voice' album, with Matthias Goerne and Christine Schafer, and excellent it is too. It has two pieces from the Matthew Passion, which got me thinking that maybe I should get hold of the whole Passion.

But there are a lot of versions and I wonder which to go for. Any ideas?

This one is very beautiful and very well played. Sterling recording.

But I would like to hear what GFFJ has to say on this one.

Thanks Mike. If it's good enough for you, it's good enough for me! You have bought my dodgy jazz recommendations after all. It's interesting that Amazon sell this CD for £38, whereas you can get it from the label (via Amazon) for £21. I'm looking forward to it. Do get the Hilary Hahn - it's really wonderful.

Dear Nigel,

Great minds think alike... (or similar) I tried starting a similar thread I was going to say last year, but I find it was almost three years ago. Eek

After some very interesting contributions (and my own workmanlike ones) the thread petred out very quickly. I hope yours does better.

Anyway, here it is for the record:

Don't worry James. I have a recommendation, and have bought the CD. Job done! And hopefully a few will buy the Hilary Hahn.

Dear James,

The time does fly by! That was ... three years ago, and I remember it as being ... last spring!

I will write a few words this evening though I think you posted the best recomemendation then, and things don't really change very fast.

There are some fascinating recordings of this, but the move towards the Historically Informed style of Performance is good news for a work like the Saint Matthew Passion in my view.
