Serious TT question.

It's pretty obvious that Linn and Rega are favorites among Naim listeners. But, what other turntables do we listen to? What other turntables are lively and musical and PRaTty, and go well with Naim? VPI? Well Tempered? Clearaudio? What about the smaller makers, like OL, Scheu, Teres and others? Any that are just dead and dull and should be avoided?

I use a 15 year old VPI that still pleases me and which has never required any repairs. It's been a long time since I compared turntables, so I really can't comment on how VPI currently stacks up with the others you mentioned, or whether it mates better or worse with Naim than the others.

I just replaced my 20 year old LP12 (Lingo/Ekos/Arkiv) with a Michell Orbe SE/SME V/Koetsu Rosewood. I loved my LP12 but felt it was time for a change and IMO feel that Linn has gotten away from some of the things that made them a great company in the past (i.e. customer service). It has only been two weeks but I am very pleased with the new kit so far. There are lots of choices out there, go and here some of them for yourself.

Midun,

Out of the ones you mention, i've always been impressed by the Well Tempered whenever I hear it.

Not sure if you'd find one in Chicago, but I have a Townsend Rock TT, which sounds better than either of my LP12s.

My Basis 1400/OLrb250/Benz silver does the whole PRaT thing as well as my cd3.5 while throwing in some of that round earth stuff as well.

OK so Vinyl is not my serious source which intially was why I purchased a PROJECT RPM 4 turntable, complete with MM cartridge.
The old vinyl that I had was played occasionally but nothing exciting seemed to be coming across through a Stageline.
It has progeressed enormously with a couple of subsequent investments in cartridge upgrades simply because as reported the arm design is quite a worthy aspect and does indeed provide a good home for higher quality cartridges.
I installed a SUMIKO Blue Point Special and began to understand a bit more why Vinyl still woos so many.
Recently because I was begining to play the old Vinyl more than before I upgraded to a SUMIKO Blackbird and invested in some 180/200g re-masters as well. I am hearing what I think "all the fuss is about". Especially on the better preserved old discs and the pristine new ones. I am becoming enchanted with the expanded dynamics of Vinyl.

I have no yardstick since I have never heard an LP12 etc butfor me SO FAR the TT is really only the basis, the cartridge is the big thing. The Project is a pretty good alternative to the cheap Rega IMHO.
