Mains extension lead

Posted by: Roy Donaldson on 17 April 2004

Hi there,

Well, unfortunately where my Naim kit is, there are no mains sockets and I need to use an extension lead to get power to the location at present. I don't intend to stay where I am for too long, so am not going to put in seperate spur / seperate sockets for the kit.

What would people recommend to use for an extension lead for say up to 6 devices ? Noting, that nothing too expensive (over 100 quid).

Thanks,
Roy.

I think you will be pushing it for £100,I have seen 'Music works' mentioned here a few times, but are over £200.Or you could make your own using screened mains cable, a double socket and a couple of Hydra's

How long does the cable need to be?

Hello Roy,

Black & Decker lawnmower extension cable (as recommended by Tony Faulkner Sound Engineer).
It's cheap, and it's orange & black.
In a cable survey the Absolute Sound admitted that the Black & Decker cable was as good as some cables costing much much more. Also that differences in cable were miniscule.

Make your own.

Use pirelli flex (as per Naim power cords) but with larger Xref 2.5 mm2 rather than 1.5 mm2 I think, and use 3 * Crabree double sockets attached to a 6 gangway case (Not sure exactly where you get these but they are available).

Take care in correctly wiring things up (Star earthing and all that)

The results will be as per MusicWorks mains block but for approx £50.

Or contact Audio Councel in Cheadle (or Oldham) who can supply this type of thing assembled. Not sure of cost though, may be more than £100).
