UK Camera Repairs

Posted by: Tom F on 27 March 2004

I have managed to damage my Nikon F65 (dropped, I think, at a wedding - beer and cameras don't necessarily mix).

It's definitely my 'fault' so I need to send the body (+ lens) to somewhere that can repair at a reasonable cost. Is this a case of any camera shop or an authorised repairer as listed on the Nikon UK site?

Grateful for any pointers/assitance.

Cheers

Tom,
whilst I was still at the Uni.of Brighton
I used to send all of our Damaged/Student abused Nikon FM2's to a company called :-
Photo Technical Services
at Hailsham
East Sussex
they used to collect, as far up as London and across from Southhampton to Hastings
their Phone No. used to be 410949 but may have changed since I left. can highly recomend them.

Cheers chaps.

Am further north than Southampton - Manchester, specifically - but will give these guys a try anyway.

Thanks again

I killed the shutter on my FM2 last year and the price quoted in the UK to repair it (£300) was more than buying another one 2nd hand. The other alternative was to send it back to Australia for repair ($250/£100) which even including postage would be cheaper than a UK repair.

"BER"

Given that my camera is one of Nikon's lower end SLRs, it does concern me that the cost of repair might be as much as replacement.

Tom,
I will tomorrow try to find out Photo tec,s
full address and conferm their Phone No,
THE way they operate [ or did] is to examine the camera and then give a quote for the full repair if needed, if all is needed is an ajustment and or minor parts this, including a a clean is all done for a standard price.A couple of years ago it was, if my memory is correct about £40 for A FM2 with a six month[I think]
guarantee. If you do not wish to accept the quote/repair the camera will be returned to you [again as you are not in their collection area it may well be slightly differant]no charge.
I used this company for about 16 years [including sending students personal cameras
for repair] and can honestly say that I never had a single problem and can, and do, highly recommend them.

If this doesn't work out, there is an approved Nikon repair centre at the end of my road. I have used them myself. They are quite expensive but did a good job on my FM3 and Coolpix 4500.

Tom,
you have beaten me to it ,yes thats correct, if it's repairable they will do it and if it's not they will still try their best.
over the years they managed to help keep quite a few of our students out of the nasty brown smelly stuff by doing the impossible on a regular basis.best of luck with the repair.

Cheers for the tip. I'm on hols next week (once we get out of the March madness where every man and his dog wants to buy or sell a company/business/do an IPO/prevent me from going home for days at a time before the end of the fiscal year) so will give them a call and see what they can do. If worthwhile i'll post an update when it's all done.

Tom,
I have been in contact with my old technicians at the Uni,over the last couple of days, and It would seem that Phototecnical Services are no longer tradeing as such, but as is usual in these things, they have been re-born, in as much as some of the "old hands" have started up a new company called
Camserve,
Unit2
The Mews,
Gardner Street.
Herstmonceaux.
BN27 4LE TEL.01323 8333OO
Mobile 07866 026617
I have asked around the people who used to use Phototechnical.and the replys were all the new place is "OK"
I hope this new info helps.Sorry I couldn't get back to you sooner ,but I wanted to be sure of my facts before recommending anyone else.

"OK"

Oldie, by "OK", do you mean "passable" or do you mean "really rather good"? Just wondering if it's worth sending it to Herst. if I could find the same within dropping off difference of Manchester.

Cheers

Tom,
I took the liberty of asking one of my "old Photographic equipment and material
suppliers" AllPhotos Ltd. of Worthing who also runs a equipment/camera Hire service to professional photographers as well as a Camera ,equipment and materials shop to the general public. They still send both their own cameras/equipment and thoses returned to their shop by the public for maintenance/repair.So the recommendation is still as good ,in fact Camserve is now down in my own address book "just in case" of any of my mishaps.I must admit though it is a long way to send a camera "IF" you do have somwhere nearer,if your unsure give them a ring and find out what their operating procedure is now ,If I get a chance I'll give them a ring myself just to allay any of my own reservations
All the best

Tom,
I have just phoned Camserve and the good news is ,that it's the same guys that I used to deal with [had quite a chat with the lad's about what had happened to them etc.the Owner/ funny finances, forced to close, you know the sort of thing] and the same conditions still apply ie ,no charge for quotes[ no work no charge], 6 month guarantee and they tell me that they now do quite a lot of mail /courier, returned/forwarded repair work.So I'm pleased to say that I can still highly recommend them
