Landline question

My phone line is dead. I've tried two different phones straight into the only socket in the house, and get nothing on either. However, when I plug my router in, it hooks up fine, I am using the connection right now. So what's that about?
BT's online test facility reckons 'fault within owner's property', and that they'll get back to me tomorrow.

Alex - yup, it's my usual line. I have tried a normal phone, and a wireless phone that is powered by a wall-wart.
Nick - I ripped everything else out before I tried the phones. A summer of BT fault-reporting temp work means I am ready for their threats of charges.

IF you have ADSL then you have a filter box where you plug the two leads in - check the connections in the connector box.
SEe if you can beg borrow a different filter box and try it out.

What's the nature of he fault? when using your normal (non-wireless) phone, do you get a dialtone or not? Can you receive incoming calls OK?
If your using the master socket in the house and there's no dialtone, it's down to BT. Your router doesn't care whether there's a dialtone or not, but a phone does.

David - nope the non-wireless phone gets no dialtone. Turns out the whole street appears to be without phones. I didn't realise that the line could appear dead, and yet ADSL could still work.

The ADSL and voice signals are entirely separate, but share the same pair of wires. Because they're transmitted at two very different frequencies, they don't interract with each other. This is why you can make phone calls and use your ADSL connection concurrently.
The signals are separated at the exchange and handled by different pieces of equipment. Hence one can go down without necessarily affecting the other providing the wires remain intact. I hope you get your phone back soon.
