Woah cool... I'm the first here...

This new conference thing is live... and we have a range of "instant Smilies" to play with

Is there anyone else out there?

Tony

Die-hard whatever from wherever.

PS what does "junior member" mean - I'm 37.

Hi Tony,

Looks like a complete new look to play with

I'd guess junior member has to do with the level of responsibility we are allowed. I'd guess that "administrator" would be a higher being in the conference.

If there are different levels, what are the criteria for moving on up? How does one become a fully fledged Naim Jedi?

"May the PR&T be with you..."

Andy

PS. Happy birthday for 1.5 months ago...

I'm here too, although I'm disappointed by their choice of forum software. I've encountered this on various other forums (including the one for Royd). It's fine as long as long as there are not more than a few messages in each thread. As soon as you have five or more, following the flow of conversation is impossible, as you have no indication which which message is replying to which. Even a basic usenet newsgroup is better than this.

I'm sorry to be such a downer, but smilies aren't enough to make me happy. I hope that Naim manages to get a server for the old software, as it was far superior to any other browser-driven forum that I've ever seen. It's interface was flexible, you could easily follow threads, and the searching was acceptable as long as you understood basic Boolean expressions. Catch you later!

I will definitely miss the "new Messages" button, as I only used the threads when posting replys.

Tony.

so here we all are....

Are the old forum contents to be migrated to this new forum?

best

ps- yeah, what's with the 'junior member' BS? I've been on the orig forum for more than 2 years!

Hey this look pretty cool. Let's hope that the search bicycle has been upgraded to atleast a scooter...

I'll miss the New Messages option as well - unless someone knows how I can get a single page with all the new messages? Or does one have to load all changed threads individually so it takes 10 times as long to read all the messages?

The lack of proper threading also seems like a step back from the previous forum. I take it that Post Reply just tacks your message on the end of the thread and there is no way to reply to a specific message?

Matthew

Posted on: 31 July 2000 by Mike Hanson
Yes, "Post Reply" just tacks your message on the bottom. There is no concept of reply tracking. It just feels like a terribly long run-on sentence. Could someone please send this forum to grammar school?

The silly thing is that I've seen this software as it developed over the years. It's gotten cuter and easier to use, but it's never improved in this most crucial area. Catch you later!

and I am 16 years or older ? Does this mean most of the Mana people won't be coming along?

We are here already, its the home made non-ferrous weenie boys that stomp off in a huff for months...

Tony

Ferrous weenie boy?

I guess that means we should keep threads short and on topic. Quoting what is being relied to seems like a good idea as well.

There is a "view replies since my last visit" option

Yes but it just gives a list of headers and doesn't expand the messages so you might as well visit each thread separately anyway.

The new levels of control we have mean we should be able to offer you all the service you deserve. Enjoy. ps we will be trying to create a link through to the old forum archives, this make take a while so please be patient.

Hey

I have had a lousy day in London, been given a good old bollicking by some spotty faced little accountant who is young enough to be my son and now I have to struggle to get in this bloody system. I thought I was loosing the plot not being able to reply to specific letters, at least I now know its not me.

Good to see Vukie boy back, even he is moaning already. undefined.

Whats the point of these silly little faces ?

Regards

Mick

Hey all--

Does seem like the software could be better, but glad the forum has survived.

Cheers,

Bob

What I'll miss as well, is the option to get the replies to your message per e-mail. I remember the times I asked for advice and anxiously opened my mailbox to see if there were any new messages! My wife hated this function by the way.

I tried the "view posts since your last visit" function, but I have the impression it didn't work correctly. It showed me all messages. Also the messages I had read already on my previous visit. If this "new messages" function will not work properly, I'm afraid the new forum won't be a succes, at least for me.

Ciao!

It seems to be rather loosey-goosey about when you were on last. I suspect it rounds it to the nearest day, or nearest hour, or something like that. After all is said and done, it still seems broken.

Catch you later!

I don't like the pages 1,2 etc. Why can we not get all the messages at once in a thread, no one has 14K modems anymore do they

Kevin.

I agree. I guess this means as soon as we want to go off topic we need to create a new thread, which should mean lots of new threads every day

Kevin.

The only problem with this is that the people who were contributing to the thread may not know to goto the new thread for the continuation of the discussion. Catch you later!

+++++ Vuks Back
+++++ 'Some' layout improvements
+++++ Profile info
+++++ FAQ
+++++ GMT Times
+++++ 'Some' user improvements

----- horrible generic ie non Naim Specific Icons
----- no reply to specific message
----- refresh gone?
----- Type sizes too big = makes messages deeper
----- No condensed thread listing
----- Search Icon looks out of place!

Overall = better... but I look forward to Phase2!

Naim doesn't write the software, so they don't have any control of the interface. This package has been under development for a long time, and they've never show any hints that they would be adding thread management and such. It's up to them.

I still think it would be better if Naim found a server who would support ColdFusion and MS-SQL. They already have the software. I offered to link them up with the guys I use, but they declined. Catch you later!

Smilies do not a forum make.

Posted on: 01 August 2000 by Willem van Gemert
First day with the new forum at work and I have to say it really is a pain. I used to have a quick look now and then to see the new messages. Wouldn't take more than a few minutes. Now I have been going back and forth for ages and I haven't even seen all new messages. The "new messages since your last visit" function is crap, as it only shows you the title and not the message. It's easier to go directly to the threads and reread the messages you've already read untill you arrive at the new ones (very irritating!). It becomes even more irritating when these messages are on page 2! The other thing which I don't like at all is that I'll have to be on-line to read new messages. At work I have an ISDN connection, so there's theoretically no problem, but at home I prefer not be on-line for too long.

In short: A missed chance. Makes me wonder why Naim didn't invite some of the Forum regulars for a round of testing before deciding. This would have prevented these problems.

Ciao!

Wille

Mike,
agreed, but whatever happens, I am sure that naim will take notice of all the comments made here. You are a software bod so you will know more than I about the customability of the 'package' that naim have used, and whether any changes are feasible. As a designer for over twenty years who now also works on the web, my comments were mainly directed at the navigation/design issues of this new forum. There are things that are better, but there is also some things missing that we all found useful.

Lets just give the naim guys a full opportunity to sort out these concerns.

Geoff
