books are better than wine

Posted by: Arye_Gur on 26 March 2004

I moved to live with my girlfriend and she has many books on shelves exactly at the only and one place when the speakers must stand.
I was afraid that the books will disturb the sound - but it comes that they are improving it! The IBLs are sitting now on the flour surrounding by hundreds of books and the sound is more alive and the lows are better than ever. The room is bigger than the former and I was afraid that the IBLS will be lost at a bigger room (I had a bad experience with bigger rooms on the past) but the sound is excellent.
As many of us like to drink while listening, I came to a conclusion that books are better than wine for this manner - and be sure that I keep drinking so the improvement is really great!

you would hardly imagine what a strong contact betwen books and wine can exist. I made DTP for lots of publishing houses and one of them sells books AND wines in its very fine shops. The free copies I got were unfortunately allways books, never bottles but I can suggest you use both of them mixed for the better acoustic environmentSmile

Well,
I drink wine only while eating and drink whisky or brandy while listening.

Books in a listening room... they're great!

One of the first suggestions I make to friends complaining about the liveliness of their listening room is to move a full bookshelf into the room. It's a trick I've been using for 25 years (back when I was still living with my parents.)

It will sound even better if all the books are about wine.

But seriously now; a friend and fellow contributor here has used a multitude of paperbacks to 'damp' his room to good effect.

I'm slurping a rather nice Chianti at the moment. (No liver and fava beans though!)

Well ... a friend asked me If the sound changes if someone takes a book while I'm listening...

If you know your system well, you will know by listening which book has been removed.

I won't comment on the wine but I believe that the IBL was designed specifically for the 'more literate listener'.

I don't know how literate I am, But I have few extra liters on my body (because of the wine).

joking apart, a room buried with books (like mine) sounds absolutely different. I don’t think better only different. And I think it contradicts the classic Linn/Naim wisdom.
