Should I CDX?

Posted by: Tim Williams on 20 April 2004

Currently running a Micromega Duo 3.1 / Duo Pro (bitstream) DAC through 102 / 180 / Flatcap into PMC FB1's (well I like them!)

I've not really listened to the Micromega for ages, but I'm trying to build up the CD side of my system (without spending a lot of money).

The question is, I guess, does the CD front end need replacing? It is an old machine now but very highly regarded (and hugely expensive!) in its day. Has CD 'technology' moved on significantly in the last twelve years or so?

I'm thinking of a CDX (a nice recentish one if I can find one), but no realistic possibility of adding an XPS for years (or at all!). Is this a good idea? Any other recommendations for around the £1,500 mark, new or used?

On a 'technical' level, what type of DAC does the CDX use? (I've trawled through all of the Naim site and can't find any information). What sampling rate is it (if this is the correct term) - bitstream, multibit (and, if so, how many bits?). Do the older players (CDX, not CDXII) incorporate the HDCD 'decoder'? Is any of this actually important?

A lot of questions I know, but I would be grateful for any help.

Cheers!

The CDX does have an HDCD decoder. If memory serves, the DAC is a twin 20-bit, 8x oversampling system.

Personally I wouldn't worry about the 'numbers'. I was sure that the Cyrus CD8, with dual 24-bit DACs and a very low jitter figure, would sound great, but was a bit bored by it, in my system at least. Similarly I preferred my old Micromega Leader to a Linn Genki. The Genki was clearly a 'better' player, but the Micromega was a lot more dynamic and involving to my ears. Now I treat the tech specs with the same large pinch of salt that I would a review.

I bought a second-hand CDX a few months back, after auditioning it alongside various other players around the £1,500 mark. For me, it was the most enjoyable listen - perhaps not the most detail retrieval, but it had soul, and made me want to put lots of CDs on! I may get an XPS eventually, but will probably upgrade the amps (72/Hi/140) first. Meanwhile I'm really enjoying the sound it's making.

However I have a very soft spot for Micromegas, and wouldn't rush to trade the Duos in unless you're actually unhappy with them. I'm sure you could listen to them side-by-side with a CDX if you asked around a bit. Maybe you could give TomTom a ring?

Yep, bubblechild has hit the nail on the head - the CDX has soul.

Tim,

You should also keep in mind that the CDX is not everyone's cup of tea- some find it a bit over the top at what is does best. I would have a listen as see if it suits you.

Oh - and I've got mine on isolation feet (Stands Unique) instead of their own. SWMBO or nippers managed to dislodge one the other day and the sound completely fell apart.

Hi Tim

Good CD players get used and suffer physical wear.

There are regularly stories on this forum of relatively young Naim CD players needing a new transport.

My advice is to buy new, or nearly new, unless you're prepared to foot the bill (and the aggravation) for a new transport.

Tim,
I have a CDX (with 200/202/FC2) into FB1's. I love the sound.
