Advice on flash photography.

Having purchased an admitadly cheapish flash I am having a bit of difficulty.

Most of the pictures are coming out with digital noise on them (I am using an olympus E10 digital)

Is there any advice on what I am doing wrong? The olympus manual is very 'wooly' in this area in that it only talks brifely about its own make of flash which I couldn't afford.

The guy in the shop said I had to set the apature manually in line with the flash ASA settings, but to be honest I am a totally confused.

I use a cheap flash with my camera. As far as I can remember it has a table on the back that shows what aperture to set for a given distance and film speed. I should imagine yours has the same thing, if not printed on it then in its manual somewhere.

Gary,
Oly's own flash will be more expensive but in the long run will probably save you a lot of time and effort and disappointing pix. I've got a Canon Pro90is and having struggled with the built-in flash and a semi-automated Vivitar, I finally bought a Canon 380EX off eBay. So much better, so much easier, does it all for you automatically. Save up your pennies for the real thing, you won't regret it.

Garyi,

What iso setting do you use ? If you set it too high (for most digi's at 800 asa) then the pictures will look very grainy. Set the camera at 100 iso and fill the missing light in with the flash.

Rob.
