brand new Charlie Haden and John Taylor recording

Posted by: Anna Tooth on 22 March 2004

We recorded a new album with Charlie Haden in October of last year. Continuing our tradition of pairing this legend of free-jazz double-bass with whomever he wishes, the great British jazz pianist John Taylor was this time top of Charlie's list.

John is probably best known for his work with the ECM label, having founded his trio Azimuth in the late 70s with Norma Winstone and Kenny Wheeler. John is currently a member of Kenny Wheeler's quartet and large ensemble, and performs in duo and quartet settings with John Surman.

Their wonderful recording "Nightfall" is due for release later this month, and will also be available, as usual, through our wesbite. There has already been a review in the Guardian:

"the playing has fragile power and these two vastly experienced improvisers listen to each other in a manner finely poised between respectful distance and quietly impassioned intimacy"

There is a big article on the pair in this months Jazzwise, out on Thursday, and a review in the Observer next Sunday.

Nightfall will be released simultaneously on CD and 180gm virgin vinyl.

I will post the usual details and links to the store when the disc is on sale.

The full Guardian review is online, here:

Thanks Anna, but why put this on the forum? Don't you think this message would be better off on the music page?

Willem,

Thanks for the input. However, the object of my posting was to inform our customers that there is a new release coming soon by two very big names in the Jazz world. This is one of the purposes of this forum, really, as a message board. I'm sure you've noticed that there are also other informative posts from Naim Audio.

As I do not have access to be able to write things on other areas of our website, I use the forum for this. When "Nightfall" is available to buy from our site, I will write another post with a link to the soundclip, and a link to the e-store - as I always do.

Anna,

I apologize. Of course you are free to post this sort of messages on the forum. Feel free to delete my original message, your reaction and this message.

Anna,

OK, you didn't. Delete my posts I mean. Maybe it is my foreigner clumsiness, but I was a tad irritated because you are obviousy allowed to 'sell' stuff on the forum and we obviously are not.

As I said, I respect this and it is your forum, but...

No doubt the Haden record is very good and you do lots of us a favour announcing its release.

I bought a record only last week, on ECM, with Don Cherry, Ed Blackwell and Charlie Haden ("Old and New Dreams"). It's 'nice' and it sounds really good, but it is not as engaging IMO as the stuff Haden did with Ornette Coleman in the sixties.

You may still delete my posts if you like!

Have fun!

Hi Willem

I don't think your posts need deleting, and it's not to do with "foreigner clumsiness"!

Of course I want as many people as possible to know about our new releases, but I also post about other CDs, albums that have been released on other record labels that I've come across and that I really like.

I made, at least, Tom and Nick happy yesterday by telling them about Fred Simon's new album via the forum. Consider my postings to be an information service, just like any other post from Naim.
