Classical Quiz

Woodface is onto a good idea with his music quiz. As that thread is getting a bit long, and leaning mostly towards rock and popular music, perhaps we can start a more classical thread. Judging from the threads on Mahler and Schubert, there's no lack of knowledge. As with the other quiz, if you answer correctly, you can pose the next question. Here's a starter:

In the 1950's Emil Gilels was first allowed out of the Soviet Union to tour. This was the first opportunity for many in the West to hear a performer of the "Russian Piano School", and he played to universal acclaim. Gilels was somewhat overwhelmed, and was heard to say "If you think I'm good, wait until you hear __________" To which other Russian pianist was he referring?

Let's kill this!

And let's start a new thread right away.

This one's too long....

I agree the thread seems to be ending. Is this
because it's too long or all the good questions
have been asked ??

Or do new people start reading and decide after
20 pages it's too long so never reach the end.

Can we [naim ??] rename this thread as
classical-quiz-archive and start again as
classical-quiz.

Or can we delete all the early stuff [most of
which is super !!] and say "look in archive for
early stuff".

I find this fun and would like it to continue.

There is still no answer to the current question.
I did not set it and don't want to have to set
the next one so ... here is a hint [I think I
know the answer] Orchestra de le Suisse-Romande
[sorry for spelling].

Is his name Ernest Ansermet?

This composer was born the same day as Carl Nielsen. He wrote, among other things, symphonies & chamber music. Unfortunately, almost all his manuscripts, as well as his body, were consumed by flames from a fire set by soldiers, at whom he had shot for trespassing on his property. Who was he?

Albzric Magnard.

Matthew-
You are correct. I've always seen his first name spelled Albéric. Just curious where you got your spelling.

Your question!
