VCR + jack input, computer soundcard
Posted by: timparker on 05 February 2005
Hi , So that i don't wreck my computer, can anyone tell me if using the line-out (phono) from my nicam VCR into my computer soundcard would be OK? I have the necessary 2-phono to jack, 1/4", lead. I am just not sure about levels(or poss. dangerous overloads)...Cheers for any authoritative help.

That will be fine tim, apart from a record deck most input devices are around the same level.

Tim,
Make sure you plug into the LINE IN input, not microphone input.
I'd be surprised if your computer soundcard has a stereo 1/4" input, unless is a high end one like EMU APS or has a breakout box? What soundcard is it, or is it audio on the motherboard?
With some high end soundcards you need to specify if you are inputting a unblalnced or balanced input. If this dosen't make any sense to you, you can be sure you have an unbalanced stereo mini jack input, which is the general standard on PCs now.
Probably confused you now...

Thanks for all the replies; i have always thought soundcard problems were simple, esp. if i went step by step , cautiously. That last message, re:Mono, made me realise why i will have to use a stand-alone CDplayer/recorder. I will surely, otherwise , end up with one channel recording on my computer...Motto:if there will be a problem - as has been flagged up - 'there surely will (be)'. Potentially saved a lot of time messing about on computer, so thanks...PS> soundcard is Avance 97audio!
