Gary,I believe Warnie captains Hampshire in his spare time. So you even have an Aussie connection with your move. Congratulations.

Derek didn't realise you are a Hampshire man, I am actually from Wiltshire and feel slightly queasy on this side of the boarder, but I will cope

You've done what I would like to do. Congratulations and I hope you can sleep with all that silence.
I take it the volume can now rise a bit more.
What are the considerations re. work, schools etc?

Rasher, we both made the decision last year that we would set a date to leave Watford, that was Christmas just gone and we did, in the space of three motnsh we have sold the flat bought this house, resigned and secured jobs each. I wouldn't have thought it was possible until having done it.
There is a local pre school then its to the dreaded Andover for normal schoolage.
Work for me is 11 miles away, for Sheila 3 miles away.
We have kind of landed on our feet really.

I hope the Macs have settled down garyi. Now all you need is the new BattleStar Galactica DVDs to while away those long quiet evenings.

Mr garyi
Replace...
New Zealand with Watford
Hampshire with London
...and that's what we did in 3 months last April. Jobs, house, everyfink!
But over Xmas! Now that must've been hell

Once you are settled take a visit to the Hampshire Farmers Markets see
HFM Web site
and check out the locations and time tables - some great produce available.
Like you I am an incomer to Hampshire - I believe it takes 7 generations to be classed as a native, however only a few days to be eligible to pay council tax

Congratulations Garyi.
Detached abode?
Can you crank up those SBL's without upsetting anyone?
I take you have them properly re-sealed now?
John.

Rasher I didn't mean to sound patronising, sorry!
The cobb cattages are terraced. Its an unusual set up.
They were built in the Napolionic wars by French prisoners. The houses were used for Officers in the war. The 6 houses for accomoadation and the houses either end were actually stables for their horses.
In 1920 the eight houese and surrounding land were purchased by a builder for the princly sum of £800. The thatch roofs were replced with tiles (although the original timbers still exist, tree trunks basically)
Also at this time an extention was placed on all the houses to give a kitchen and bathroom. The front gardens were reduced to about 20% to allow the building of houses to the right. Although built in the 20s they are referred to as the new houses.
Suffice to say the whole area is steeped in histroy and very are very much the outsiders. On guy to the left of me has been there all his life, his dad had it before him and his dad before that. The people on the other side have lived in the village all their lives and in this particular house for 30 years.
The net outcome is although the walls are very very thick, I havn't taken the piss on volume. Although I havn't had complaints yet with the dial at 9.30 on the hifi. To be honest in the room its perfectly accpetable and the whole house exudes peace, and quiet music seems to fit the bill. Curiously I have gone right off heavy D&B and have begun pulling out the Van Morrison and Joni Mitchell.
All in all very happy thus far (plenty of time to get jinxxed though lol!

Looks like you've done well, gazza, though I have to tell you I've got a similar view of a field through my (spare) bedroom window - and you used to live only 15 minutes from me, remember!

If I sounded sarcastic, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to. Honest.
I really do think you have done really well, & I'm jealous.

Ah, tractors!
Don't watch too many repeats of "Forever Green" or you'll begin to believe it.
Get an ordnance survey map and really explore your new realm on foot and bicycle. Then you can start campaigning against filled in ponds, hunting, shooting, off-roaders, mountain-bikers, Roundup, hedge-clearance, ancient-tree felling, the green-welly brigade, Landrovers, muddy roads, rally drivers, puddles, footpaths, bridleways, dawn chorus, lack of road maintenance, lack of streetlamps, fear of the dark, cockerels, shunning 3rd generation "newcomers" down the pub, etc.
Or just enjoy all of them.
