Nait 5i vs 112/150

Posted by: Scott Ryan on 08 April 2004

I've heard some rather unimpressive reviews of the 112 preamp over the last couple of years. With the passive preamp section of the 5i (and the same volume pot as the 252), and assuming an acceptable speaker load, how does the 5i sound compared to the 112/150 combo?

Note: I'm not interested in amp upgrade options or the extra number of inputs in or of themselves - it's the sound comparison I'm wondering about.

Hey Scott...

Not heard a 5i but when I auditioned the 5 against 112/150, the 112/150 was better but not be enough to get me to spring for it. Also, the Nait 5 is holding its value better on the 2nd-hand market so is less costly to move from. And it might even end up in a second or hand-me-down system.

I found 112/150 too light and not very Foot Tapping without a Flatcap.
