Moseley Shoals - opinions?
Posted by: jayd on 09 April 2004
I was reading reviews of Kula Shaker on Amazon, and "Moseley Shoals - Ocean Colour Scene" was one of the "Listeners who bought Kula Shaker also bought..." suggestions.
The reviews are all over the place, from "album of the 90s" to "so bad it's good" to "truly insulting". It's hard to get a feel from 5 30-second low-fi clips. Anyone know this band?
thanks.

I'll never forget when Ocean Colour Scene first came out. My influences then were prog rock based and at the time I felt the main stream music scene was rubbish. And then OCS.
At least these boys had a bit of life about them, but it soon got repetative and the links to that guy thats been around for ages who gets on my tits (Can't think of his name, Nick will know) put me off them in the end.

Depends what you like, I guess... I'm with Alex G: they sum up all that has been dull, derivative and reactionary in british music over the past 15 years - dreadful, dull soul-less muso competancy, the sort of music Weller and Gallagher would have us listening to. Avoid.

Well, I'm a fan of Paul Weller as a guitarist, and it was the guitars on the OCS clips that caught my ear. I've had too many albums, though, where good guitar work couldn't save bad writing. Must listen further before plonking down my pesos...
Thanks for all the replies so far. I've honestly never even heard of this band before. Makes we wonder what else I'm missing; I suspect the answer is, most of it. There just isn't enough time to hear it all (how does David Slater do it?).

Thats it Paul Bloody Weller.

The album dates from when TFI Friday was good. Which means a long time ago. It's surely bargain priced and very cheap now. So probably worth owning.
Anyway I like the title, although we're not talking about anything of the same order of goodness as issued from its pun-father.

This isn't a bad album, but I like Nick prefer their follow up (I even like their third album). Clearly not trendy enough for the self selected style police on this board though. Mosely Shoals is worth having for the superb Riverboat Song (TFI Theme), and I would'nt expect to pay more than 4.99 for it (easily available in s/h CD shops).

I've not heard the album, but the singles that came from it were among the worst ever released in those particular years. Therefore, I'd have to be some sort of masochist to have listened to an album worth of their dirge.Still, if you like Dido, Beth Orton, The Darkness, Menswear, Shed Seven or The Sea Horses then you may just like it.

I wasnt too keen on this album either... Much preferred the follow up... But I have pleasant memories of watching "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrells" and loving Hundred Mile High City from the moment it started playing...
If you are going to get a OCS album, get Marchin' Already.

Personally, I really enjoyed MS when it came out, even with the TFI Friday link (the programme was good then, but Chris Evans was still a dick!).
Mind you, I dunno if I'd like it so much now - I've not played it in years, and since then I've got into Love, and can see where the comments re late 60s/early 70s are coming from.
Beth Orton though, how can you lump her in with the pure cheese quality of The Darkness? She's dire dire DIRE. With an awful voice to boot.
"Get away" is a great track though I saw OCS live SOMEWHERE in 1996 (Knebworth/Oasis maybe?) and that track was storming played live! Great bassline as well IIRC

Music with a sweaty "authenticity" and po-facedness. But if that's the kind of thing somebody likes, then it probably isn't the worst example of that kind of thing, if you know what I mean.
TFI Friday was always rubbish, FWIW.

I see why the Amazon reviews were all over the place.
Stevie, I appreciate the offer, but I've already bought a copy off eBay for the princely sum of 99 cents plus postage... I'd have bought Marchin' Already, but this one was priced right and going, going... I'll have to see where my own dividing line between "sweaty authenticity" and "utter pish" falls. Although, if I like it, I'm beginning to think I should treat it as any other guilty pleasure (as I do with my addiction to Slade records) and just keep it on the down low.
On a side note, I also scored a copy of Mogwai - Rock Action for the same price. Very excited about that one. I've only heard one Mogwai tune so far (the almost ten-minute "2 Rights Make 1 Wrong"). Hope the rest of the disc is even half as good as that one.

So, the OCS is alright. I don't mind young dudes wearing their influences on their sleeves - which they certainly do. I'm also a sucker for a great hook, and there are several to be had here. "Lining Your Pockets" alone is worth the money I paid for it. Good, solid pop. Ok, a couple of tunes cross over into blatant rip-off territory, but at least they seem earnest about it.
The Mogwai, on the other hand... brilliant. (Did someone change the rules of rock and roll while I wasn't looking?)
