There is much talk on this forum about musical this and timing that, PRaT is all etc. However this is more frequently countered with fears of having over dusted the speaker cable with the wrong type of Mr Sheen.
My question - what is the ratio of expenditure Hardware:Software.
Surely someone who really loves music would want to spend lots on software once they had bought a reasonable but basic system?
Cheers

Guys,
Having being into rock music for nearly 30 years listening to recorded music and hi-fi in the early days was my fathers old Bush "music centre".
Then in the late '70s going to concerts became my next step into the experience of music from which i have never recovered.
In 1984 i was introduced into the world of HI-FI when to me the ulimate system was LP12/Ittok/Karma, Naim 32.5/Hi-cap/250, Linn Sara speakers.
In 1985 i finally got the system i wanted LP12/Ittok/Karma, 42.5/Hi-cap/110, Heybrook HB1.
Over the last 19 years the turntable has been the only 'source' and has seen every upgrade possible even to the latest addition of an Akiva cartridge.I have only recently upgraded my 42.5/hi-cap/110 to a 202/stageline/hi-cap/200.
The music for me will always come first, but the better the system it is played on the more enjoyable it becomes. At the moment it is very enjoyable indeed and the cost over the last 20 years has been worth every penny.
500+lp's
Music is analogue and always shall be

Interesting subject, I thought Gary i had a good point about 'big boys toys' - I (and it is a personal thing) did without my system for many months and 'survived' on a diet of my car CD player and a very cheap Aiwa portable. In some ways I feel sometimes we can be getting away from enjoying music, by er 'lusting' after more expensive equipment. Don't get me wrong music on a corking Naim system is great, but not a lot less enjoyable on an Aiwa portable. yer pays yer money and yer makes yer choice innit.

If my "HiFi" system had remained static from DAY 1 I might have grown away from listening to music simply because it was a lousy HiFi system. I found Naim and that opened a window on music appreciation which would have otherwise have remained closed.
The "upgrade" bug has subsequently hit and revitalised the music periodically as old CD's get revisted to hear the extra nuances of the music revealed as the upgraded system components get better at their job.
Whilst I use my system to appreciate the music I have to be honest and admit I would not be listening to music at the level I do today if I still only had a "crap" HiFi system.

As I was reading through this thread that is exactly what I was thinking.
I started off with a reasonable collection of lps & cds accumulated over the years but having discovered Naim my interest in music has been rekindled.
