Speaker Cable Termination

Posted by: Paul Hutchings on 19 March 2004

I've just purchased my first piece of naim kit, a 9 month old Nait 5 off ebay.. should be here early next week.

I need to sort out some cabling, specifically speaker cable, and from doing a little reading it appears it's best to go with NACA5 with a minimum of 3.5m (way more than I need but if that's how it should be done!).

My question is about termination - I've not yet spoken to my local dealer (probably Acoustica at Stafford) but how much should I expect to pay to get the amp end terminated with Naim plugs (including the plugs)?

Whilst I don't wish to sound like a cheapskate, I can't help but think there must be folks who needed to go to longer runs of cable who have this sort of thing available.. I notice there's no classifieds forum here so I guess there must be some guidelines on that sort of thing - if anyone's able to provide some hints on where I could try I'd be grateful.

regards,
Paul

i recently picked some up on ebay, so thats worth looking at again, or maybe www.hififorsale.com or at the pink fish media forum http://www.pinkfishmedia.net/forum

Ended up calling acoustica and they tend to use some nickel banana plugs because apparently the naim ones have a habit of almost lifting up the back of the amp if the back of the amp isn't flush with the back of the rack it's on.

They're only £1.25 each and they won't charge to terminate them so that seems easier than messing about the s/h route and having an amp sat here on monday that I can't use..

I get the impression from digging around here that acoustica are very well thought of so it's nice to have them local.

This one cost £420 on a "buy it now", mint, boxed and with 15 months warranty left it seemed good value so i didn't hang around for the end of the auction.

All I did was go to ebay (.co.uk in this case) and search for Naim, nothing special.

What is 420 in €'s

Bud normaly the warrenty is 5 years or not. (two years?)

I bought last week a NAIT5 from october 2003 and it cost me € 700,- and i get 5 year warrenty trew the distributor.
I was not buing in a shop but at a person.

I also ask people for NAC A5 cable. Now i've 2 x 2 meter. I think those 1,5 meter less must be no problem. If it is; let it hear.

Otherwise the price of the NAC A5 is not to much so you can buy it new.

Does somebody know an english pricelist with € and pound on the list?

Robbert,

You can do your own currency conversions:

£420 = 626 Euros & 700 Euros = £469

I simply used one of the many online currency conversion websites. An example below:

http://www.xe.com/ucc/convert.cgi

I would suggest you obtain longer lengths of NACA5 to meet the minimum Naim recommendation. It isn't a matter of listening for differences. It is a matter of your amplifier's stability.

Is the warranty usually 5 years or is it dealer dependant?

I know when I was chewing on whether to buy the amp I emailed Naim and Richard replied that Naim warranty is 2 years and is transferable, beyond that is it down to which dealer you buy from?

I know I'll be getting a copy of the receipt but I don't know the dealer (the chap lives in London so it doesn't narrow it down to 1 or 2).
