Cardboard Boxes

Posted by: Rockingdoc on 06 April 2004

I need to send a Snaxo and HiCap for service (when the caps are available), but don't have the original Naim boxes for these.
Do you know if Naim always return these boxed, and how much will they charge for each box?

I once sent a Quad tuner for service in a perfectly good other make (Linn actually) cardboard box, which they threw away and charged me a fortune for a box with Quad printed on it.

Hi Doc

Sounds like a good excuse for a trip to the factory.

Failing that; ask Naim:-

My "new" box for my NAT01 last August came free with a £247 (including carriage) factory re-cap
Posted on: 07 April 2004 by Rockingdoc
That sounds quite expensive for a re-cap, so perhaps the box cost is hidden?
I heard that Linn charge £50 for an LP12 box.

I would possibly go to the factory once to save the cost of boxes, but not twice.

Time to start a cardboard company making replica boxes I think. What a rip off
Posted on: 07 April 2004 by Markus
Rip off? IMHO, I doubt it. When you factor in Naim's relatively small quantities and the specialized sizes of foam, etc. the costs don't seem out of line. After all, the most mundane, mass-produced boxes at moving supply stores cost several dollars. We are talking about 3 or 4 orders of magnitude difference in quantities here...

Also, consider this. When you packaged up your Quad tuner you no doubt thought you did a pretty good job and would have been willing to accept it back in the same package, right? Well, look at it from the manufacturers standpoint. They need a reliable package that will virtually universally stand up to all kinds of abuse. How would you have felt if you had paid for a service, only to receive the tuner in an unworking condition? From the manufacturers standpoint, well engineered packaging is a part of overall reliability, maintainability equation.

One other thing, you think you packaged your unit well. Well do you know any idiots? I do. I see them doing all kinds of stupid things, from driving recklessly to going down to the the post office, with packages wrapped in all kinds of haphazard ways. Very very poor packaging. Judgement about this sort of thing varies from individual to individual and some folks may not be a careful as you were when you packed your quad tuner. It simplifies things and makes things manageable, from the builders standpoint, to have standard packaging and standard processes that require that these sorts of things be used.

Lesson? Don't throw out the boxes and, if you buy used, make sure that you get the original boxes and packing with the goods...

Markus

BTW, I apologize, in advance, for being so PREACHY in my post above. Guess I'm just sorta in that mood...

I heard that a new box for a 250 costs c£40, including foam

My initial reaction was that this does seem steep, though I am sure naim could justify it

that must be to amortise all the R&D costs Roll Eyes

I am involved with Box Manufacturers through my work.

I cannot comment on Speaker Boxes (thats a lot of cardboard) but standard component boxes which I presume are double wall corrugated card plus the printing on all sides should come out cost wise tops £3.00 per box on an order quantity of say 500.
Using simple maths on naim's serial numbers - approx 10,000 per year - lets assume components make up say 7,000 of these sales - On a quarterly order quantity with a box manufacturer of say 2,000 boxes I would expect to significantly improve on the £3.00 above.

I have not factored in the foam bits etc, but £30.00 for a new component box does seem a bit steep to be honest.

Last year I had my CD3 overhauled. It went away in its original box in virtually mint condition and came back in a series 5 box with the CD3 model and serial number stickers. I'd be seriously pissed off if they charged me for an unrequested box upgrade. I never saw the breakdown of the cost.

Do not forget that in the development of the "box" one has to take into account the cost of the equipment that has been damaged/destroyed in the development (crash testing) of the box -

the 500 and 500ps boxes are a joy to behold - good enough to take on holiday as suitcases <g>

The only Naim boxes that I did not keep and store were the boxes that the Fraim stand came in - they were returned via the dealer to Naim - so I hope that they re-use them for shipping stuff to shows etc. - the rest of the boxes for the electronics and the WB speakers occupy space in what other people call the garage but I refer to as the hifi box store. <g>

Yep, and when you consider that Rega have been making the Planar 3 for decades and it's into 100,000 figures, £40 for a new box for that was a hell of a lot (or did that include the lid - I can't remember???)

Folks, where's your spirit? Isn't the obvious solution for someone to lend our fellow forum member a box from their loft? Don't have one myself, not that far up the chain, but it might be a good mutual support strategy many of us could benefit from. I'm sure a loaned box won't get too knackered up.
