DIY Naim interconnects
Posted by: Rockingdoc on 26 March 2004
After much experimenting I am (reluctantly) forced to admit that the original Naim interconnects sound best in my system. But I still need to fiddle about and make up my own leads. For example I need a few DIN to phonos, and vice-versa, for my non-Naim components.
Anyone know where to source the cable off-the-reel, and where to obtain the best DIN plugs?

As one who has never tried Kontak.......are the effects of using it audibly beneficial?
Yes, I wouldn't do it otherwise
The small bottle will last several years if you do the system every 6 months, which is what I do. Usually during one of those moments when I finally get pissed of with the dust levels under the equipment
The best way to describe the difference Laurie is as Rockindoc has, it removes a veil that slowly appears over time (and is not removed by the Naim-approved method of contact cleaning).
The systems sounds quieter yet more dynamic and less edgy, with better resolution, post cleaning. The more connections you do, the greater the benefit. Treat the entire system head to to (interconnects / fuses / mains plugs etc) and it's quite astonishing.
It's about the only cleaning treatment I know of that's promised not to leave a residue, it's a contact cleaner not a treatment.
It requires a lot of elbow grease, is incredibly volatile and the muck that's liberated from otherwise apparently clean connections is shocking.
Personally for the cost of a couple of CD's I think it's worth every penny.
This sums it up nicely: -
""One might expect that Kontak's use would result in subtle improvements to the sound of one's system. That might be so in some circumstances, but my experience suggests that in most cases the changes are far more dramatic. You'll notice the system will appear quieter at rest, more dynamic and markedly more detailed and informative when running. There is often a new-found sense of ease about the presentation too."

Rockindoc,
RS part no. 367-577 could be worthy of investigation. It's lower capacitance than the Maplin stuff I mentioned and the description is closer to the Naim stuff. Wouldn't mind taking a closer look at this myself...
It's £22 for 50m.

well, with a recommendation like that. i will have to try some. Where can i get some at the best price?
I am in the market for about 10 metres of cable....for the video etc.
I don`t need 50 metres so if you buy a reel, perhaps you might be prepared to do a deal on say, 10-15m?
I need some between vcr & 52, and also TV tuner, etc..although not "critical" i would still like to get as good a sound as poss without spending silly amounts on it. I`m happy to pay you for a length (say 3 metres)on your recomendation

I've a some Maplin cable that's similar in look and construction (4 core screened) that I bought cheap. It's a little thinner (0.5mm) than the genuine article and has a little higher capacitance, but you are welcome to some for free, to try. It's what I use for connections to less-critical items (TV / DVD etc.).
It's not as good as the Naim stuff (because of the different characteristcis), but you're welcome to a few metres or so, if you wish to try it, no charge.

Laurie,
You can have some of the Maplin stuff FOC, I paid bugger all for it as a bin end.
Drop me an email,
Andy.

Thanks Andy..
PS My RS catalogue shows cable stock no 367-577 at £29.60 (+VAT) per 50m reel(= £34.78 incl VAT)
Is this similar to Naim`s cable? Has anyone tried this?

Laurie,
Is your catalouge old? It's £21.82 + vat unless it's a misprint. You can have a free RS CD with your free cable too

The one I used is at work & is dated Sept 2001!!!!!
(I have a more recent one home)
You mean that the price has actually REDUCED??
Good news if true. thanks again
Anyhow, if this cable gives a reasonable performance, its worth a try...not sure i could use 5om though.
i`d be prepared to split a reel with any willing partners...the main point though is.....does it work?
i have your home email on my home PC & will contact you regarding your offer.
I think I live less than 40 miles from you.....i`ll happily pay postage
