naim series 5 with dynaudio

Posted by: Klva on 14 April 2004

Hello,

My current system is CD5 + NAIT5 + Flatcap 2 + NACA5 speaker cable.

My loudspeakers are Infinity SM 155 : 102 db/W/m, big 15" boomer, range 29 Hz - 20 KHz...

The sound is quite good on the lower range, but medium and high frequencies do not sound good...too sharp for my ears !

Thus, I'd like to buy a pair of Dynaudio Audience 52 SE. Question is : their sensibility is rather low (86 db) and their impedance too (4 ohms). Will my Nait 5 be powerfull enough to drive them ?

Thanks for your replies
Regards

Welcome to the forum!

There've been quite a few discussions on this recently - use the search function and have a browse.I run a Nait5/cd5/fc2 with Dyn 62's, which are more or less floorstanding 52s, and it sounds wonderful. The amp runs the speakers well even at low volumes, good top end detail, nicely controlled bass - although I do use the foam dampers when I have them near the wall. Before these I had some Dyn 40s which were similarly fine. Well worth an audition. I use Chord Rumour and am wondering whether some lenghts of NACA5 would make things even better.

Happy shopping

Thanks for the reply. Do you use stands with your 1.3 mk II ?

Thanks for the reply. What do you call "near the wall" ? Less than 2 feet ? And do you use stands ?

Hi

I used rumour and oddessy with my audience 62's into 72/hi-cap/140 quite a while back and found the top end harsh. I highly recommend NACA5 as I have since gone over to it, you will expect a darker sound, but the bass lines will flow better with midrange sweetening and is less shouty.

My NACA5 was second hand, two runs of 4 metres, when I first plugged it all in, it sounded terrible and took a day to become listenable then over a period of a week simply amazed me at how much more controlled the sound became, so be patient.

Hope this pursuades you to get some!

6 inches away! Not great I realise but its a concession to the realites of family living. When everyone's out, they come 2ft away from the wall, grilles off and volume up. The bass gets tighter, the midrange sweeter. And as they are floorstanders, no stands!!

Thanks, I'll see if I can get hold of some. The top end can be a tad harsh once the volume goes up. Might be a good excuse for a trip to London - I don't think anyone in Oxford stocks the stuff. Can anyone recommend store that keep it in stock?

2 ft away seems a minimum to me... imagine my wife's mood when I place my present loudspeakers 2ft away from the wall (3,6 ft high x 1,5 ft large x 1 ft wide !!!). Moreover, the walls are not vertical because I'm living just under the roof, so 2 ft at 3,6 ft high means 4 ft at the base !

I hope Audience 52 will soften her mood !

I run Nait3\CD3\NACA5 with Dyns 52 on stands.I currently use the foam dampers because Dyns are too close to the wall.
It works well, even at low volumes, but you have to wait a few weeks to achieve the best result.
Hope this help

Dyns 52 are wonderful even with my lovely but a little underpowered Nait2 . I don't think that their rather low sensibility (86 db) and impedance (4 ohms)could be per se a contraindication to their use with a Nait. I think that Nait 5 will be powerfull enough to drive them.

I initially tried them with some Kan II stands which I have. they sounded good but the top plate of the stands seemed a bit small, so I didn't feel they were secure enough (cats potentially jumping on them).

I eventually bought ex-dem Partington stands (I think Partington used to make these especially for Dynaudio speakers, can't remember their name but it was something that suggested a link to Dynaudio).

I see from their website that Dynaudio now market their own stands.

What is it you can't source in Oxford? NACA5? I'm sure Audio-T in Headington stock it and also Oxford Audio Consultants down in town, that's where I got mine.

I run with the NAIT5/PLANET/DYNAUDIO

It is perfect. very good controls on high or low level.

Just do it.

BTW: you got my dream set Smile I'm saving money for an CD5 and later the FC2.

Robbert,

if you really intend to buy CD 5 + FC 2, "just do it" too... it's worth the price ! Your ears will thank you...
