Nait 5 - Locking DIN plugs?
Posted by: Paul Hutchings on 21 March 2004
I'm having some DIN-Phono cables made up for my soon to be arriving Nait 5.
Can someone confirm whether they are rotating locking or latch-loakable 5-pin DIN plugs?
cheers,
Paul

They are rotating locking. Incidentally there is a belief here that the collars should be left undone. It is supposed to be very slightly better for the sound.
Try it & see.

Mine are undone but can someone please explain why this is the case?

Something to do with microphony I think.
The collar connects the cable more solidly to the socket.
Plus; locking the collar twists the plug (unless you hold it) and can 'de-centre' the pin contacts.
So arguably, a better contact is achieved without the collar secured.

If they sound better with the collars undone, surely Naim would have just stuck with the latching types?

I suspect that this may be a 'safety' issue; and maybe latching plugs were no longer available, or the ones with the locking collars were a better quality item?
I think the official line is do 'em up so that small fingers can't easily pull out plugs, or leave 'em off if you want.

I've tried them both ways and the difference is too subtle for my ears! Funnily enough this has no impact on enjoyment of my system.

I couldn't tell any difference, but the locking plugs are much more secure than the latching ones.
