Why Mana Soundbases

Dear Forum

I am confused,

Everyone raves about putting soundbases underneath SBL's and equipment in general.

If the piece of kit (SBL's in this case) are already well spiked, why would moutning them on a spiked platform make any difference. It is my undersatnding that the SBL's have a damped bass port on their underside, surelley the relationship of this to the floor would be compromised by mounting the speaker ona platform.

I' curious about all this isolation malarky as I have yet to take anything from it beyond snake oil.

Hi,
could you describe the listening room?
Also what you don't like about your sbl's that needs a support like the Mana?

I use them under my SBl's, and they seem to firm up the bass and increase clarity without sacrificing pr&t.

I don't know why it works, but Sound Bases under my spiked Sara stands were money well spent.
Why do spikes under spikes make a difference? Why does it make a big difference which way you run a speaker wire? Why does vinyl sound better than CD? The best part is that people who refuse to make the comparison, including a lot of engineers, will tell you that these things aren't true because, well... they can't be.
Fascinating, isn't it?

SBL's are weighty speakers, and when this weight is concentrated onto the points of the spikes, the pressure beneath the area of tip is enormous. That would suggest that the support beneath this would be beyond influence of the spike, and that provided that the speaker is seated properly and cannot rock, it should be the same whatever it is sitting on.
So Mana Soundbases are nonsense.
I have Mana Soundbases under my SBL's and I couldn't live without them now.
It can't work, but it does somehow. Really, really well too!

Rasher,
Good one! - made me smile Wink, especially after all the faffing you did to get yours working ok.

kindest regards,

i suspect there are a few people in the hifi industry who really "understand" issues of this type -- rack design and equipment support, but i would not be surprised if these same people do not want their "knowledge" in the public domain since this would most likely compromise their commercial advantage.

i also KNOW there are load of others in this industry who are basically into snake-oil type products.

i also want to understand why soundbases would work (or not) under SBL's -- one of these days i'll try them -- but i am nowhere close, despite the numerous "theories" that have been put fwd.

i suppose its more fun to search than to find...

enjoy

Dear Forum

It is always somewaht edifying to elicit a reponse from you all, particulalry when it is based on something closer than religion/faith to science.

For those of you who wanted to know, my listening room has been made wife friendly, which means laminate wooden floor. This took away all of my bass, to the point where I bought a small REL sub bass unit. After around 6 months of faffing I got it properl intergrated to great effect. Due to limited wall space I can't place the SBL's close to a wall (Doh!) However, despite this being almost a fataly flawed system and set up it works flawlessly.

I used my headphones and headline as a benchmark for the sound I was aiming for, and have finaly got it.

My interest in Mana Sound bases comes from the fact that lifting my speakers by aprox 2-3 inches would leave the main drivers unobscured by funrniture.

My options are either some nice big chunks of marble/granite with some rubber underside to sit the SBL's on, or some MANA sbl stands on e-bay.

by the way there are currently 4 or 5 sets of SBL's on ebay at the moment, I have never seen so many for sale at once, or so cheaply, most are around 400 to 500 pounds, any one for and SBL based THX 7.1 cinema experience with seven NAP500's etc.....

Opinions on rock or MANA gratefully received.
