Nait5-CD5-Stageline * Flatcap2 or HiCap2??

Posted by: glevethan on 05 April 2004

Hello to all

Here is a question (although I am not ready to go through with it yet):
My system is composed of a Nait5-CD5-Stageline-LP12-Lingo2. Which would make the best upgrade- a Flatcap2 to power two components ie the CD5 and the Stageline OR the Nait5 and either the CD5 or Stageline

OR

a HiCap2 to power just the Nait5?

Thanks for the reply. I am probably only considering the purchase of just one power supply- either a HiCap2 for the Nait OR a Flatcap2 for 2 components.

Gregg,

I have Nait5 + Stageline + HC. I use CD as often as LP so HC is on Nait. FC2 does allow powering two units, but adding the second unit reduces the juice to the first unit. HC2, you'll be able to keep up to 282 level system.

Thanks Peter
Your advice matches a suggestion made by my dealer. My only question begins to regard the cost. Once I add a HC2 to the Nait5 it appears that I begin to approach the price of Naim's opening line of seperates. One then asks if it would not be wiser to trade in the Nait and move up to 112/150.

You'll still want a HC2 if you go 112/150. Get the HC2 first then upgrade to the 112/150 later (or even better wait until you can leap to 202/200).

I have a similar system. 112/150/HiCap2/Stageline HiCap/CD5/NAHA/FC2. The 112 and the Stageline are both powered by HiCaps and the CD5 and NAHA are powered by the FC2. The HiCaps made a significant improvement for me.

True, only you can decide, and only you can decide if you want to get on the upgrade cycle upto 282 and beyond. But, keep in mind that the best gains in performance are to be had in the front, rather than the back, end of the system, imo. So have fun!

What do you mean by the "front" - the Nait or the CD5/Stageline (source first?)?

I think the hicap2 would be best, but would wait to jump over the 112 to the 102/202 level of preamp. I bought a used 82 that way and have really enjoyed the difference.
Source first would be the CDP and stageline, then upgrade your preamp and then your power amp last. That is as long as you haven't made your speakers obsolete (which is usually the case).

Life is analogue

Oh, for their lies the rub!

Well, It depends on your priority. Vinyl or CD or both. And the budget you've got available. So, you could go 2xHiCap2 c $4000, right ? and you HiCap Cd and Stageline and then you get a third for the Nait, that's c $6000!. At $6000 you have to ask yourself if you want 3 more boxes in the system. You'd also have to ask yourself if you want to keep the CD5, rather than go to a CDX(2). If you decide to get two HiCaps, you then have the option of going to 282 level, and still keep the stageline on it's own supply.

I've considered the 2nd HiCap option in my Rig, but I'm wondering whether a different Phonostage (Slee or Dynavector) wouldn't be a better option, but still either way I'm going to have a power supply box. Unless I got an Accuphase integrated Eek
