Padded Cell entropy?

Posted by: Deane F on 02 February 2005

Is it just me or are things slowing down in the Padded Cell? Dying a heat death, as it were.

These things ebb and flow, and people come and go. And come back again. Over a long period it makes no difference. Happily, I’m working too hard at the moment to regularly lower the tone. You might call it a win.win.

The generally more spiky nature of PFM is what has put me off posting there. Plus this is my first forum so I feel more at home here.

And I'm a confirmed, card-carrying, one-eyed Naim fanatic. (So there.)

I like this place and won't be leaving but I hope things pick up again.

I hope Naim isn't losing interest in maintaining the forum as has been intimated by some. It makes them unique and reinforces the brand loyalty I hold for the company.

The forum upgrade and bout of early spring cleaning don't look like the actions of someone who is losing interest. Quite the opposite.

I keep having these visions of thousands of frustrated Naim fans still struggling to get onto the new forum. It took me literally hours of going round and round and round and .....Is my paranoia justified? Cool

By the time they do get on they'll be totally exhausted or in a blind rage. That should add some spice! Anybody for a bit of S&M? Big Grin

Harry - thanks for noticing.
Although things always move slower than one wishes - the forum has been upgraded in terms of function. Content will be up to the members.
It was my intention to make the forum more self-regulating and free. Perversely, this required a period of strict enforcement of (I hope) fairly graspable rules.
Within a forum there can sometimes be a grey shading between sharing knowledge and being an unchallenged "expert".
On all forums there exist the spiky pretenders with their friends and enemies. Their fights and triumphs can be bewildering to newcomers and, perhaps, dully predictable to regulars.
It was my intention to restore the forum to a more egalitarian club – rather than allowing it to degenerate into a collection of cliques.

Well said Adam.

I have always enjoyed the "feel" of the Naim forum - it says a lot about the members, and you, the sponsor(s).

Sgt Bilko is brilliantly funny and has a touch of genius to-boot, Rumsfeld doesn't & hasn't, and never has had, innit.

If Adam really has been performing some kind of self-indulgent, distruptive social experiment in the name of clique-busting I can only assume he is in fact St*ll*n and is therefore banned.

Matthew

Where did Matthew even hint at a "self-indulgent, distruptive social experiment in the name of clique-busting"?

He purley pointed out that some people were possibly using the forum to put across their own agenda - or Naim bashing - that's not good for Naim or the purpose of the forum. It's also, as pointed out by newer members, intimidating.

I would have thought that the whole reason this forum exisits is for like-minded Naim owners to share views and hints with other Naim users.
If it starts to get bitchy because people have different views, then the Naim Forum isn't the place for it.
Yes, the Padded Cell is for discussion of things other than Hi-Fi but if anyone posts Racist or Homophobic, Sexist, anti Naim or other derogatory posts, then I believe that Naim SHOULD remove those posts and even the right of the poster to post: After all, it is a NAIM forum!

Or worse: A collection of clichés! Smile

The thing that strikes me is how the anonymity of the poster allows for inflammatory invective. I doubt in all seriousness that many of the statements and and comments made by posters would be made were they face to face with the person or persons they are haranguing.

I think some posters could benefit from visiting some other forums and see the level of vitriol that exists and the amount of thread hijacking with the self same self indulgent arguments by the same individuals.

Adam (and Naim) are providing an environment for discussion of varied topics in the Padded Cell. It does not need to exist, as the aim of the forum would still be achieved by the other parts of the Naim forum. I do not understand the biting of the hand that feeds.

The really interesting thing is that this, and the other thread about the padded cell, are in themselves examples of animated debate - presumably the very debate that some appear to think is lacking from the forum.

You are absolutely right about pfm. It is often very poorly moderated (not by Tony L himself I might add, he's always acted as professionally as is humanly possible) but on occasions the belated, arbitrary, heavy-handed, inconsistent, hypocritical, clearly biased and misdirected interventions by a couple of his moderating team leave a lot to be desired (in my honest opinion.)

Just think of a weak teacher trying to regain control of an unruly class. S/he begins by jumping all over one of the usually well-behaved (read compliant) kids who has simply, as a one-off, retaliated in the face of persistent and relentless provocation by some other class members in a series of chaotic events over which the teacher presides but has perhaps not witnessed - or has chosen to ignore...

Moreover, the team place themselves above reproach and refuse to even take - let alone answer any criticism.

In comparison this place is about as good as it gets.

Is this what "IMHO" stands for? I was always under the impression that the "h" stood for "humble". This discovery sheds a whole different light on many things.
If I could be arsed going back through old posts I might alter my opinions on people.

However I think I'll listen to some records instead.

Rod

(- in no way an attack/commentary on you Steve)

The H of "IMHO" usually does mean humble.

That is why I avoided using the above abbreviation as I felt that "honest" here would be more appropriate.

You guys are right - what a "self-indulgent, distruptive social experiment" - I can see how much better it would be as a collection of cliques.
Could you give me an indication of the exact number that would be correct?

I for one am missing the fact that I haven't been accused of arrogance, posting re-constituted garbage from low-rep blogs, Frenchism Eek or lacking creativity, for a few days now. Even worse, it has even been suggested recently that I have 'adopted the right tone' in a recent post.

I do hope that these terrible events are not the result of the new, Maoist, 'continual revolution' changes to the forum.

Still, hopefully my new 'G7 neocon' post will bring out the usual suspects for a good old punch-up.

Adam

I think it was Matthewr who made that particular assertion. Please don't include me in the "you guys" collective.

Frankly, though, the whole forum experience is self-indulgent - not that that's necessarily bad.

Yes - I don't want to make anyone unpopular by singling you out for praise.

But - don't worry Deane I know you're an individual and didn't include you in "you guys" - nor anyone else, apart from those I did.

And - Steve M - I know where you live.

Actually I don't but do drop in for tea if you are in the neighbourhood.

Adam

I'd always associated motorcycle riders with coffee (and cigarettes) until now. You're breaking the mould I guess - a tea-drinking, obscure-Keats-joking motorcyclist.

Strange how many classroom analogies crop up. And yet, I never feel like a teacher dealing with the odd, unruly miscreant.
