If all else fails .....

Having upgraded to the new ref. kit and been through the upgrade path up and down with most of the olive kit I thought I knew my Naim SNAICS from Burndys, Snaps from Hicaps and preamps from CD players.
My long suffering wife will tend not to notice these frequent changes and has no idea of costs

As long as the story goes that I am helping it through a difficult period and someone will buy it for more on epay when it is time to sell!
Recently she has been paying a bit more attention. As the Xmas presents shrunk and the valantines present disappeared she has begun to ask where my whopping salary goes. Is it a mistress?

Unfortunately not! It's a 552, 500 & NBLs
The 500 was noticed. Well you can hardly miss it! The NBLs were a disaster. The seller phoned home for my mobile no. and the game was up

She would have found out anyway as I could not lift them out of the car on my own. As for them being the same footprint as a SBL(quote from HIFI +) are they h*ll they are like the twin towers used to be!
The last stealth upgrade was the 552. I flew it back on a business trip. Left it in the car for a couple of hours then sneeked it in behind the couch to be unpacked. All went well. I knew if I got the boxes under the stairs I was home and dry! I quickly slotted the amp and PSU into the Fraim with the usual hunt for straying ball bearings and the give away crashing of glass. Connected to the other bits and sat back for perfection. Well it was better than the previous 72 but worth the cash??? Much harder to call.
Anyway after a couple of months of happy listening I found a poly bag down the side of the sofa. It had a Naim price list and something else..........
A 552 manual! I opened it and read the bold text at the top of the 2nd page. " Remove 4 transit screws! OPS Scotties!

I quickly peered under the 552 and confirmed they were still in place and probably not helping my perceptions of the flagship preamp! Ballbearing hunting again! Things have improved quite a bit in the last day or 2 but the moral of the story is as my wife keeps telling me we we buy anything new...

Hey, don't worry about it - we all make mistakes. Hope it's sounding that bit better now.
Sent you a PM re: the Prefix, by the way - did you get it?

I think that hiding Hi Fi purchases from your partner in this manner is utterly disgraceful.
harrumph.

I don't; how many items of clothing do THEY sneak in the back door? eh? Eh? EH!?
Women have better hearing anyway, so the upgrades benefit them more...

Perspective?
Does the viability of the Stealth Upgrade mean that what we consider to be jaw-dropping improvements in performance go *unnoticed* by other people, even people that live in the house and hear the system all day?

Unfortunately not Greg - I've already checked this one out and they're a wee bit taller. Also you'd have to replace the Flatcap with a hicap and a napsc hidden under the floorboards (did I really think of that one?)!

actually, the do notice that "something" has changed; they just have too many other more important things to worry about.
also, i can tell from my wife's face that she detects any improvement in my system; but rarely does she ask "what have you done" for fear of "encouraging" me.
recently i have been in her good books as i downgraded to passive, but she has been somewhat confused by the sudden appearance of new style kit.
ah, well...

Mike -
Taller yes, but no hicap needed. From the Naim website:
"The NAP 200 also has a separate winding providing a pre-amplifier power supply. This enables the NAP 200 to be used in a two-box amplifier configuration with a Naim pre-amplifier such as the NAC 202."

My wife's view is it interferes with her watching the telly upstairs!
It just produces noise pollution whether a 552/500/NBL or my old 52/2*250 SBls. My dear wife thinks her old Sanyo music centre was as good and took up much less space. It is amazing what tricks the mind can play over time. You actually forget how bad the music centre was as it was all you had in those days.
The 25Hz on the NBLs winds her up as the house vibrates :O)
Unfortunately, when I go to T in the Park I don't last long due to the Low Fi which is most outdoor live music!

We have an Aiwa compact system in the bedroom and I used this as a "main" system when I was between systems. Man, it sounds dreadful now that I am back with Naim

How about finding a decent dealer who does more than showing you the door with a box under your arm....easy work for his £2K+ profit margin!
I thought Naim was quite keen to ensure that dealers actually look after their customers...

Jo, I think Charles bought his 552 secondhand - so perhaps dealer support wasn't offered.
That said, certain Edinburgh dealers do sod all for their money anyway - having bought a fair amount of kit from them in the past I never once was offered any kind of setup assistance. Cowboys!

My mistake then....
But I do agree that some dealers do not provide the level of service that should be offered; otherwise there might be fewer basic set-up questions on here!
