Bands you've seen many times

Posted by: Kevin-W on 24 March 2004

I confess - I have seen New Order in concert 66 times (1981 to 2001).

Anyone else sunk to similar levels of gig-going obsession?

Kevin

(also: Kraftwerk 6 times, A Certain Ratio 32 times, Pink Floyd 15 times, Durutti Column 28 times, etc etc)

QUO!
The only act I've seen more than once is Status Quo, around 8 times from 1972 to 1998. I don't have any of their CD's, but live they are brilliant.

The Fall. Think I'm in double figures now, but sure there are many people who've seen them more than that.

Utterly compelling and totally unpredictable.

I saw The Members 57 times, over about two years.

At no time did I see a "Members Only" jacket, though...

Rory Gallagher about a dozen times '72-'76
Stray about half-a-dozen times, same period.
To be honest, I used to go every week to see whoever was on locally, and these guys were the most workaholic.

Uh, what do you mean by "band"? Does the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (I've seen them dozens of time) count as aband? Wink

3 Times :
Thin Lizzy
Rory Gallagher

Twice :
Pat Travers
Status Quo
Motorhead
Iron Maiden
Def Leppard
The Enid
Manfred Mann's Earth Band

Having attended Reading Festival on a Number of Occasions, I'm sure there is someone i've missed.

At the Grateful Dead's Hallowe'en concert at Wembley in 1990, I met a bloke who claimed to have seen Garcia and Co. a staggering 383 times!

He spent most of the gig timing Jerry's guitar solos with a big stopwatch and rating them out of 10.

Peter C only the second mention of The Enid here, mine was the first one. Really good gig Finsbury Park Astoria I think.

Arthur Lee with Love (ie, NOT the original gigs in the 60s - I wish, wasn't born then!) seven times since September 2001.

I only discovered "Forever changes" in June 2001, so that's not bad going Smile

Other than that, I've only seen one other (paid tickets) band more than once - REM - once at Cardiff Arms Park on the Monster tour, and once at Glastonbury - 2003 Smile

I've seen many of my favorite bands multiple times, but the only act I'm in the double digits for is my favorite, Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, whom I've seen 22 times. If you like Springsteen, you have to see him live whenever you get a chance. Awesome shows, usually 3 hour sets or longer, and he changes the set list frequently, which means you can see him several times on the same tour and see/hear a different set each time.

The band I have seen most often are Orbital. I've seen them 7 times since 1990. Last time I saw them was at Somerset House a couple of years back, when they were rubbish. If they put out another stinker like Altogether, I wont be seeing them again.

Primus/ Sausage/ Les Claypool- 8-10x when I was in school

I've seen Half Man Half Biscuit probably 10 times now which is probably my highest individual total.

Not so fast BigH -- The Enid were first mentioned by (I think) Stephen Bennett (who you would have thought young enough to know better) in a thread on Prog Rock over 2 years ago. And amongst other things it was noted that my Dad has indeed filmed them in concert (twice in fact -- once at that farm thing of theirs and once at Stonehenge in 1984).

Ok I stand by to be dissed....
I have seen depeche Mode at least once on every UK tour they have done. Thats at least 10 times.
Other more than once's include: Simple Minds, Ultravox, Genesis, Human League, Faithless.
Now if you count DJ's then Sasha has had a fair amount of cash out of me too...

The jesus and mary chain about ten times. The wedding present, The pixies and frank black slightly more. I must have seen the fall more than twenty times (still have the habit, about three times a year).

Oh lord, I must admit to marillion, during the late eighties. After all my mates lost interest, I continued to see them live. Such was my obsession at the time I attended three consecutive gigs by myself on two seperate tours, three of these were at the hideous wembley arena.

I think I'm up to 8 times for Richard Thompson. Seen many local bands much more than that, but generally even my favourite bands I feel I'm lucky to have seen at all - partly due to a lot of big names not making it up this side of the border... Frown

There was a period in the mid 90's where every festival I ever went to, Cast were playing. I never really thought either way about them, but have ended up seeing them probably 5 times.
I have seen Pearl Jam 5 times, Soundagarden 6 times & Neil Young 3 times. Bush 3 times andf I don't even really like them, I saw Rory Gallagher about 5 times within 2 years in the late 70's, and I've seen Yes twice, the first time in '75 and the last time (& I mean the last time!!) in about '99.

The only two rock band that I have seen twice are Jethro Tull, once in 1984 at Inverness Ice Rink and in 2002 at The Glasgow Concert Hall - still bloody good live; and Motorhead, once at the Barrowlands (deafening) and at the Armadillo (not loud enough!).
From Jazz I've seen Tommy Smith 3 times , Michael Brecker twice and Nils Petter Molvaer twice

I have been to watch the Saw Doctors, 3 times a year (at least) since 1996. Woo yay!

One of the unspoken but pertinent facts in repeatedly seeing a "band" is that you're likely to hear them playing many of the same pieces each time.

On this basis, I suggest that the CSO probably does not qualify as a band.

Anyone who has seen them dozens of times, however, qualifies as damn lucky. Smile

Off The Charts

Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead

Over nearly twenty years, I saw the Dead over two hundred times. I never timed Jerry's solos, but I did sometimes measure how many days I was ecstatic after seeing a particularly good night with the Dead. On their best nights, none of the other amazing performers I have been fortunate to see manage what the Dead could do. Their magic was slippery and elusive though, and did not always arrive in full measure. But when it did, it was easy to see why they became one of the best loved live acts in their era without any hits, and with many shortcomings obvious to others, and at times, to me. Still and all, when the Dead and their audience were in rapport, and the muse was sitting in with the band, they were able to unlock the storerooms of joy.
