Card reading problems with Nikon D70

Posted by: Blobdang on 06 February 2005

I have a 2.2GB PLUS microdrive card with my Nikon D70.

I have just returned from a holiday-of-a-lifetime from Africa. I had taken about 400 pictures, when suddenly the Nikon could no longer read the card.

I am now very concerned - no more-like distraught - that I have lost these pictures for good.

Has "new technology" let me down yet again Confused?

All ears...

Do you have a card reader for your PC? It's likely that you will be able to retrieve the files in this way. Minolta has issues with data corruption but I've never heard of this problem with a Nikon.

I don't know if there are any issues with microdrives. I stick to 512Mb cards and just feed as many through as I need to. I don't think I'd want to put 2.2Gb of eggs in one basket.

Hope you can get it sorted. Any old USB card reader will hopefully allow you to get the files.

Good luck

When I bought my D70 I looked at a 1Gb Microdrive but the guy at Jessops advised me to stick to 512 cards. His reason was that he had seen too many microdrives fail.

That was good enough for me to stick with CF cards.

I hope you get your pictures from your drive - good luck !

I cant add anything of value to what the others have said, but i wish you the best of luck and hope that you can read the files with a PC..

Phew Smile

Card reader also couldn't read, took it to local Data Recovery guy Sunday evening, now have all images on CD great service - mighty relieved.

Apparently damage to card may have been caused by power surge from the camera. Heard some bad stories about microdrives - think I'll stick to Compact Flash cards in future.

Incidentally does anyone back up directly from cameras to their PDA's while taking photos on holiday etc?

Glad to hear you got your images. I trust you have made at least one copy of the CD by now ........ Winker

Don't have a PDA but I am considering buying the Nikon Coolwalker for the self same purpose.

Anyone use one or tried one ?

Hi L-T-D

I can't say I have any experience with a Coolwalker but now its available for £300 it's a bargain. My friend's just about to buy one.

Also, it has the benefit of enabling you to view NEF files which I doubt you could with other storage devices.

Yes probably will be cheaper, depressing isn't it!

Glad you got them back. I don't use anything bigger than a 512Mb card at a time, on the basis that should the worst come to the worst I'll "only" lose 512Mb (gulp). Maybe I should switch to 256....

Cheers

Harry

There's only a few quid difference. 512MB will be fine.

Soon, the 1GB CF card will be cheap enough to be almost disposable........

I can't see why one would want to do that, as the storage on a PDA is too small to be of any use. If you install a storage card in a PDA, then you are only transfering images from one card to another. In this case, surely it would be better to shoot on two seperate cards?

Imagerecall is a very cheap software (£20) which I've found excellent. I had to use it once when I accidently formatted my card before I had downloaded to my pc.

Just for back up purposes - peace-of-mind
